Saints 'agree deal' for Ramirez

Daily Echo: Gaston Ramirez Gaston Ramirez

Saints have at last reached an agreement with Bologna for Gaston Ramirez, according to various reports in Italy.

The clubs are said to be close to finalising a €14m deal, which would see the 21-year-old forward become the most expensive player in Saints history.

Negotiations appeared to have broken down last week, with Bologna indicating their demands had not been met.

However, it is being reported that talks began again over the weekend, with Saints tabling an acceptable offer in principle.

Uruguayan international Ramirez, who has already indicated that he has agreed terms at St Mary's, could complete the formalities of his move in the coming days, assuming the clubs can now finalise things between each other.

The deal will reportedly see Saints pay Serie A side Bologna €14m, while Ramirez's former club Penarol, who own 30 per cent of the player, will be given 30 per cent of any future sale.

The Daily Mail says Blackburn are making a £4million move for Southampton striker Lambert.

He may even offer David Goodwillie to Southampton as part of the deal although 30-year-old Lambert is unlikely to want to swap the Premier League for the Championship.

several posters have said that the likely scenario was that Bologna are just so broke that it wouldn't take much to tip the sale through.
Especially as Nicola walked away and said thanks but not with all the theatrics. Expect the deal to go through a lot smoother now!
CB's now then !
Do not want the Ricky sale to get any more oxygen, it really should not be even on the media agenda. Is this a genuine offer or a bit of unsettling, like Bpool aleged about Philips. Only difference is that we really do not need or want to sell and Ricky is unlikely to want it either!
Might help Jayrod though !

Was it just me or was one of the main differences between the teams on the weekend was that we thought we could have 2 or three touches without being shut down or then being able to pick out a pass? And the lack of movement was even more of a concern. For the record I am also now confident this deal will go though (for what its worth) and Ramirez will help bring improved decision making to the team. Oh and CB/LBs are key!

He will be right of a front 3 or right of a midfield 4 but can play in the hole. Quite right he will have no effect on RL's position. He will replace Guly and Puncheon but I do see Guly getting the loan role up front quite often this season. (unfortunately) Now lets go get this left back from Ajax! Up The Saints!

Gaston Ramirez

All these players have been rumoured or linked with Saints.

If we signed all four I think we would have a pretty good squad.

It would seem that what swung it is that we pay Bologna more money, but don't pay Penarol anything (they get 30% of any future sale), whereas the old deal was £12m outright.

So Saints turned this around and still saved money - shrewd move Nicola.

Please do not let Lambert go, I do not see any advantage at all.

Think he maybe going to AC Milan though

Firstly our star striker Rickie Lambert is going nowhere, NA needs 2 go back to the tried and trusted 4-4-2 formation as by changing has lost all the confidence and momentum built up from last 3 seasons, or its simple Nige bye bye and find yourself another job? Simply not good enough, Lets hope Saints sign 7 or 8 top players cause we desparately need them, then wave goodbye and thank Guly, Richardson, Seabourne, Chaplow, Hammond, Puncheon, Butterfield, Lastly what a waste of money it was spending 6million on Jay Rodrigues then sticking him on left wing, we obviously payed that much for a goalscorer so please play him up top with Super Rickie Lambert and let him do what we brought him for! because he will forge a very good partnership and fire us the goals we need to win games and get some points on the board.

It will give NA the schemer he so badly needs.
You have to applaud the vision of whoever spotted that this is the type of player we were lacking even before the season kicked off,I assume it was NA.
We have plenty of "water carriers" that ramirez could milk.who knows we could end up with ice-cream.
Next formation to try "the cone".
Ricky lambert is going no-where and I hope billy sharp who was the best player for me in pre-season gets slotted in.
A CB is the obvious shout but super kelv needs to get to grips with his left hand bottom corner-been exploited twice.
Apart from that,Im still gunning for mid table, cant see the point in wanting less.

Please can you supply the stats on this one? When it comes to Guly, I think you'll find it tends to be about a 50-50 split.

I wouldn't start Guly as much as NA does but it's unbelievable how quickly he gets criticised after a bad result while other players seem beyond any kind of criticism. Maybe the 'any other explanation' that you can't see is that NA has noticed something in his 93% pass-completion rate or (in both matches) his first-half endless running.

I'd like to think paying this kind of money for a new player will mean he'll be good enough to hold down a first-team place quite easily (probably in place of Guly) but that's part of the continual improvement and development of the squad, not to pander to the idiot boo-boys who seem to have a go at Guly no matter how well he performs.

I don't think the problem is Adkins other than to stand up to NC. If you look back at how Guly was bought it was all NC and I think there's either diect pressure or implied pressure by NC to play Guly all the time.

I don't see any other explanation. The vast majority of us who watch Saints can't be wrong. Guly is not Premiershp quality neither was he Championship standard other than to be a squad player to cover injuries.
Why do you think that "the vast majority" doesn't rate Guly? And why do you think they can't be wrong?

so you think a manager who has obvious integrity ( not leaving scunny untill they had been given proper compensation) would allow an exec chair to pressure him into picking a particular player in the team? my god what have you guly haters come to. NA and others look past what can be seen as laziness and see a player who can play in different positions and has a great pass completion percentage! and also scores goals.
i remember another player who played like that, and he is treated like a god. now i am not saying that guly is as good as le tiss but christ give the bloke a break and get off of his back. if he fails to deliver (and i dont think he has very often) then moan, we are 2 games into a long season and guly has played well in both games and some either cant or dont want to see it!
if you can tell me where he has played poorly in the last 2 games.

Just remember where we have come from in two seasons! We got to the PL too quickly IMHO, and probably needed another season in the Championship to keep building and adding to the squad, but here we are, with basically a L1 team in the PL. Yes, I know, Norwich! But they are going to struggle this season, you watch.

Nige is a very good manager, but he needs time to ply his trade against the very best in the world. He will come good, zero doubt there and has to work with the squad he's got and get the best out of them.

NC is a solid businessman, he is not like the hacks we had running things before we went tits up, he knows EXACTLY how to put a deal together and manage the operating budget he has set out for the company, remember, we are a business now, and being run as such.

I trust both of them know exactly what they are doing and are trying whatever they can, with the squad they have, within the budgets they have set, to keep this club in the PL.

Okay Stras, so the club was saved from oblivion, put on an enviable debt-free financial footing and taken from Div 1 to the Prem in two years. But neither Nicola or Nige have yet made a single blind man see; parted the Solent so the IOW fans can walk home or even turned a stale slice of Hovis into 30,000 free pasties. So - they're still on probation mate.

Stras, where do you get your pass completion statistics from?

As a committed statistics nerd, I need stuff like this to keep me happy.

He will come good, zero doubt there and has to work with the squad he's got and get the best out of them.

so you think a manager who has obvious integrity ( not leaving scunny untill they had been given proper compensation) would allow an exec chair to pressure him into picking a particular player in the team? my god what have you guly haters come to.
Wasting your time I'm afraid. The downers on Guly won't change even if next Sunday Guly sells such good dummies to Vidic, MCarrick and Cleverly that they all have to pay to get back in.
I think some wont be happy unless we are relegated so that they can blame guly for that! and tell us how we would have won the league and cup double with their choices.
guly could score 5 against manure and some people will still say he dissapeared from the game and should have got 10. all this moaning must affect his game surely.

Agree with you mate as soon as i saw the line-ups i was livid, but my dear old mum said to me calm down son, have faith, well I've calmed down but you know and i know you want go forward losing points like that coyr and foadp.

Yeah well Guly's stats do surprise me, it doesn't make me like him though. he's just a very frustrating player to watch because he'll do something brilliantly and then immediately mess up an easy pass and im left tearing my hair out. if he scores against Man utd i will praise him, but he won't will he?
anyone for a bet?

Didn't you used to be in Danny Wilson? (the band not the footballer/manager). Give us a bit of 'Marys Prayer'.

This is obviously good business all round. Southampton get £4million cash to offset the £16million cost of buying Gaston PrimaDonna. Rickie gets the chance to develop his career at a bigger club, and will be able to play in the Premiership next season after enjoying a successful promotion season, instead of playing in the Championship after the long nightmare of a futile relegation struggle.

Why not? He might score. My main criticism of him is that he's overdue a goal, so let's ALL hope he bags one or two against Manure.

With hopefully Ramirez making his debut and matching the performance of Michu (a supposed Saints target) on his debut for Swansea.

or we could sell him to a league 1 outfit, do you know of 1 with £4mill to spend? if you get the begging bowl out you might raise a few quid,(oh no youve already done that) he could then spend a couple of weeks not getting paid before a liquidiser comes! or if you did survive he could spend next season playing in league 2! bye bye skates

Look, sometimes I'm frustrated sometimes by Guly, like everyone else, as he does drop his head sometimes. However, his passes DO get to the person he aims them at, which is one of his jobs.

To listen to the people around me in the crowd yesterday, he never does anything right ever under any circumstances. Makes me wonder why NA plays him (and no, I don;t believe NC makes him!)

As I posted yesterday, I had words with someone behind me who blamed Guly for not getting to a pass that was way out of his range. He didn't blame Lambert for a poor pass, no it was Guly's fault for not having eight foot long legs.

We need to get behind the team that NA chooses, not scream for changes all through the game. That can't help in keeping Guly's head up.

WBA are the masters of "yoyoing" in and out of the PL.
They now look like they could be a well established long term PL team.
70-80m every time they got promoted and 40-45m parachute payments whilst in the Championship.
This has meant they could afford to keep most of the players when dropping to the championship and bounce straight back again.
Each time they came back up they added some quality players and now seem a decent side.
Having the PL standard ground and set up etc obviously helped and getting millions of pounds for about five or six years has helped them to do "very nicely thank you"
If we were to go down (which I don't think we will) it wouldn't be the end of the world and the finances would be in place to do a "Baggies" and return to the PL the next season.
Other teams such as the skunt fishf@ckers don't have the luxury of a PL standard stadium, Academy, Training Facilities, Large Fan Base, Large Attendances and players that other clubs would want to pay millions of pounds for, so we would be in a very good position no matter what happens.
Having said all that we now look set to complete some very good signings this week and have Tadanari Lee close to fitness. We are only two games into the season and will start to surprise a few teams I'm sure.
If we can get a mid table position by Christmas I'll be confident we will recruit again in January and do well.
I'm just so glad we can call our Stadium, training ground, academy and players ours.......unlike the cheating, begging, corrupt sh1t hole of a club at the other end of the M27

now that is a proper take on the situation we are in.
would like to add to pervious post about gully
I think nigel picks him more for his athleticism than his ball skills.
his contribution to the saints cause has been fantastic since he came here.
and yes his first touch can be iffy he gives what he's got for the team,so as we get players in that are more specialised in positions, eg wide men, he will find it more difficult to get in the side.so stick with him and support the team
and rejoice in the fact that you aint a skunt!!!!!

Agreed!

The one who frustrates me the most is Adam because he really does have class. However, for every great shot tipped onto the bar, there's another moment where he takes an extra touch or balloons over - just like Guly, really but without the moaners getting on his back.

Agreed! The one who frustrates me the most is Adam because he really does have class. However, for every great shot tipped onto the bar, there's another moment where he takes an extra touch or balloons over - just like Guly, really but without the moaners getting on his back.
I think you'll find it has something to do with his ethnicity!
Adam is from Bournemouth - Gully from Brazil. Enough said?
Guly has a lot to offer - I think in some instances he is too far ahead of the players around him. We are too slow in spotting the space he makes with his runs.
Yes sometimes his first touch is poor, and sometimes his finishing is less than brilliant - but he gets in the positions!
I'm hoping Ramirez will light his fire!

Interesting stat came up my twitter over the weekend- Morgan covered the most ground in the prem at the weekend, 7.3 miles in 90 mins! That's pretty good going but just goes to show how much extra work he had to do 2nd half when we switched to 4-4-2.

Why not? He might score. My main criticism of him is that he's overdue a goal, so let's ALL hope he bags one or two against Manure.

Thanks for the link to the stats everyone.
With hopefully Ramirez making his debut and matching the performance of Michu (a supposed Saints target) on his debut for Swansea.
True. Have you got any inside (Italian) news over there, John?
Sorry Strasbourg Saint have no "Italian inside" information but I do strongly suspect if the deal does go through the hold-up will have been about payment term i.e. % cash, % invoiced. The Italian economy ( also known as the black-market) survives on cash. It is well known after football the popular Italian pastime is avoiding paying tax.

I have to say, compared to many parts of France, the Alsacians (such as Morgan) do have a pretty good work ethic.

...and he doesn't rate Hammond or Chaplow either to cut it in this division, they could be gone soon to clear the wage bill, at the very least out on loan.

Remember, we need to scale down to 25 players to get us to January at the end of the week. That will be a good indication of who NA thinks can cut or those that can't.

Only 4 days left then to sort who's in & who's out. Hope the only disappointment of the week is Guly's news from this morning. Bit of a shocker that. Nice of The Echo to give us the valuation of that particular Porsche range, I was thinking of buying a couple. Can we get to use his porsche do you think. All those Hot Dogs and coffees we buy at matchdays we probably own maybe a door handle or interior mirror.

Come on Gaston, you know you want to. RED ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRMY!!

Well perhaps he turned to the bottle after reading all the stick you lot give him on here!
There is no call for anyone to get behind the wheel of the car when over the limit - but what was over the limit?
The police would probably react very quickly. From third party experience they ask you to blow into the bag - and if it turns colour X - you've had a drink. If it then turns colour Y after 1-min (from memory) you are arrested.
There are no levels of innocence - but 2-pints could send you over the top - AND HOW MANY OF US ARE GUILTY OF THAT?
So let's see what happens - if border line on blood test then give the lad some slack.

Why not just sign 25 players and be done with it! Plank!
I think Gary has this one right. The seven listed are not quite good enough and need replacing at this level. I would have made exception for guly, but now that he has done a barnard and been arrested for a drinks-fueled crime in Southampton, guly also has to go. He was borderline at this level anyways. Now there's a plank for you.

I thinkit's a typical reaction from supporters that have got used to bossing games and winning.
For many of us long suffering "fans" to lose was second nature, especially to teams like Wigan (no disrespect intended!).
Watch all the plaudits return and positive vibes once we beat United on Sunday!
It's the sort of thing Saints do...still!
Cut the lads some slack - they are finding it tough too. WE are meant to get behind our team win or lose. The floods of people leaving once the second went in on Saturday was disgraceful - but it was game over!
Didn't have sound on the game but I didn't get the sense of the intensity of last season, the crowd seemed nervous and edgey.

Have you ever transgressed, maybe without even realising it? Yes, he was foolish, he was caught, he will now pay the penalty, I will wait for further developments before I go shouting my mouth off. I have never learned to drive, so am not qualified to say how I would react to alchohol in this situation, but I regard it as a serious offence, as serious as people who drive using there mobiles, it still happens with amazing regularity. I would imagine he could miss a couple of games and the Club will deal with it internally as ever.

I think we may actually cause a major surprise and beat United. Rooneys absence will help I suppose but they have many other options.

I saw a Bill Bailey routine the other day describing Rooneys face as being like a childs drawing of a cabbage. The features are all drawn together in the centre like the top of a kids duffel bag. Priceless.

Anyway ... get back on the beam ... I hope the Ramirez saga is over now.

I'm fairly happy with the signings so far .. we just need that centre back. Fonte is far from a lost cause but he needs a mentor to bring him up to the next level. I remember way back when Mark Wright arrived, he was sound .. but playing with Chris Nichol and having Shilton guiding him raised his game massively. The same could happen here but I'm not sure Hooiveld is a "mentor" figure. They have a good understanding but they need to reduce the errors and Fonte lacks spped on the turn.

Oh well. it's a waiting game for a few more days. Remain calm people, the NA/NC alliance will prevail.

Most people who left the game just after the second goal went in, were probably disappointed with the refereeing decision, which was just a continuation of his lack of involvement in the game, and clearly ended our chances of a equalizer, which was on the cards. The ref let a lot of heavy challenges go and didn't really have a handle on the game, it was fortunate no one was injured. The crowd were quite nervy, and the empty seats (for whatever reason) didn't help to build the atmosphere that makes us the "12th man".

Hopefully the Ramirez deal will be completed.

I think the CB problem is mostly caused by Fox.He can't defend and pulls the CB's out of position all the time. Also, Fonte might not be strong enough, so we must get someone in this week at CB and LB.

We bought Rodriguez as a stirker; he has to play there and not wide on the left. My guess is that in the final line-up, he will. Saints can't afford to pay £6-7m for a player and either not play him or play him out of position. They must see him as leading the attack for the future.

To be fair and balanced the second goal did go in on what 88-89 minutes so why shouldn't fans leave early. Also to be honest booing at the end of a match is not necessarily a bad thing if used sparingly to demonstrate frustration at a poor performance.

Still no sign of any transfers and I doubt we'll see any today either because of the cup game that then leaves only 2 days realistically to bring someone in. I am beginning to wonder whether all NA's talk about activity in the window is simply that JUST TALK. I don't doubt NA has been great for the club but I am beginnning to wonder whether he's lost the plot a bit with the transfer strategy or is it that he doesn't have NC's full confidence so money is being withheld for a potential new manager to use in January. Now for the avoidance of doubt or confusion I am not in anyway advocating na is removed but we do need to get moving with strengthening the squad. I fail to understand why nothing has happened since Clyne signed.

We played Rickie out of position on the wing quite a lot soon after NA got here. I would suggest that it made him a more versatile and complete footballer.

It's a bit like some people who play golf, and get narky that the game in front is running up the fairways to speed things up. If you haven't got the time to enjoy it,don't bother in the first place. Footy always takes 90 minutes + injury time, so surely you'd take that into account?

The criticism of NA/NC is way too early and completely unjustified.

Their work is just beginning in the premiership. Its a different world to the one we have known in the previous two years.

THINK !! We are spending money, we are getting good players, we are being careful and we will prevail.

Heckling for major changes at this stage is just stupid. The team tactics are being built. Let them do their job and I am certain we will be in a much stronger position as the season progresses.

It's all common sense.

It was a fantasy that we would take The Premier League by storm.
We need time to get accustomed to the pace and the higher level of skill by the majority of players.
Seems now we are getting ready to adjust with new signings - and players returning from injury.
No excuse for Fonte "trip" on Saturday - we were capable of sneaking an equaliser up until that point.
So as mentioned in another thread - Lee is returning. I think he can set our season alight with a camoe 15-minute display against United (if we are still in the game at that point!)

Decent enough, with a bit of experience, too. Has been in various England squads but a shoulder injury (and Martin O'Neill, perhaps) hampered his progress and he eventually moved on to Brum. Doubt he'll ever quite get into the full-Engalnd squad, having so far only progressed to U21 level.

Would rather one of those being mentioned elsewhere but let's see.

I am one of those that sometimes leaves early. I live in London and both driving down and getting the train takes a couple of hours each way door-to-door, leaving 5 minutes early can sometimes mean I get home an hour earlier than I would do otherwise.

If it is a close game then I will always stay to the end...but if Saints are 3 or 4 up, or losing by more than 2 goals with a few minutes to play then sometimes, yes, I do leave early so that I can bet a lot of the traffic to get home.

Saying that you would prefer supports like me not to attend is crazy, would you really prefer genuine supporters not to turn up because you are offended that we dont stay the whole 90 minutes? What about those that go for a beer at half-time and get back to their seat 5 mins into the second half? Or those that pop to the loo for 5 mins?

I am a loyal Saints fan, and I watch them as often as I can. I could argue that I am a bigger fan as it takes far more of my time to come and watch a game than it does for a local.

I just think some sensible perspective is required, we all want the same thing - a successful team well supported - but football isn't life and death.

We played Rickie out of position on the wing quite a lot soon after NA got here. I would suggest that it made him a more versatile and complete footballer.
I would suggest that Lambert was a bit lazy and unfit when he first joined even if he did score a lot of goals. He took himself out wide and failed to get involved where a big striker should. He's now fitter and stronger and lays the ball off well, as well as score goals, but he's never been one to really mix it in the box on a regular basis. He always seems more content to drift wide, but no one can argue with his goal tally.Rodriguez would make a different contribution leading the line and I think his goals will come with time and confidence. The question is do we have the confidence to fully back him having spent the money? He might not have the ball striking power of Lambert, but has better feet and is a lot quicker.

Fair enough, Saint PC. I really have a problem with people leaving early, but I understand your point of view. Better to have you there for 84 minutes than an empty seat for 90.

One of the benefits of league one and the championship was the ease of attending away matches. At a few of the away grounds (Coventry especially) I noticed that the traffic to get away was incredibly well run, and that there was plenty of parking at the ground.

I think a big part of the problem with St Marys is the fact that it is squeezed around a gas works and a bridge, and close to town with rubbish parking. Sitting outside ocean village for an hour or more is almost enough to make me want to leave early.

But I don't because at the end of the day I think it affects the players to see st Mary's flooding for the exits before they've finished the job. Good guys like Hooiveld deserve better.

No because I dont drive,I cycle, neither am I a professional highly paid footballer who might have to play a competetive match the next day.
It is still an offence to ride a bike while drunk mush. How many times have you done that? Ignorance is no defence. Just like being a skunt really. :)

Bigfella, you're not a Saints fan. Your life must be particularly tragic to be on another city's website making comments at 8 in the morning.
Shut up you tool, I've lived here all my life.
Yeah he's awful I agree! I mean how dare someone perform better than Lallana in the last 2 League games and help us up to the PL? **** rude!
