Southampton agree deal for Emmanuel Mayuka from BSC Young Boys

Zambian forward Emmanuel Mayuka Zambian forward Emmanuel Mayuka

Saints have agreed a deal for Zambian forward Emmanuel Mayuka from Swiss side BSC Young Boys.

The 21-year-old plays for the national side, scoring 10 goals in 38 appearances, and has scored 18 league goals for Swiss side Young Boys since joining them in 2010.

Nigel Adkins has described Mayuka as "a lightning-quick striker who will bring something different to the group that we already have."

He will wear the number 24 shirt once the deal has been finalised and it is hoped he will be available for the match on Sunday against Manchester United.

The striker passed a medical today at St. Mary's and is now awaiting final clearance for the deal from the Home Office.

He has agreed a five-year deal with Saints and was part of the Zambian team that won the African Nations Cup.

He looks very quick, maybe be used as an impact sub? Fits the bill. Just hope this doesn't mean Rickie is on his way out but if he is I really can't see why he's drop down to the championship again, I mean he wouldn't pass the chance to play at Anfield would he?

Competition in the squad is great but I think if Gaston is coming in too, there may be too much of it. It seems as though Emmanuel has come in to do the role Tadanari Lee is supposed to be filling in his return? I don't get what NA is thinking in this deal but hopefully he has his mind on the other end of the pitch too.

Agree with saintsteve I can see him playing wide right/left with gaston on the other with tad lee/puncheon providing competition for places then lambert/jay rod upfront, I don't see a roll for billy except maybe impact sub to try and nick us a goal, I know many will think wtf another forward but we need pace up front and I hope the lad will do well for us, I'm certain we will see a cb or 2 and a left back before Friday. deals are no doubt being thrashed out, and I think this signing will help show prospective signings what were all about, and that we want to bring in exciting youngsters and challenge, I'm sure there's doubt in players minds as to how serious the don is when he tells them he wants Southampton to be competing for European football! actions speak louder than words and signing this guy will encourage some that are perhaps sat on the fence that the don means business

This guy is brilliant from what I have seen in the ACN. I thought a pl club would be looking out for him, never thought it would be saints.

Make no mistake, this guy would have given us that bit of pace and skill that could make a huge difference. The thought of him and Tad Lee, who looks good on his recovery, in the same team is superb.

I am really pleased with this signing, complete surprise but make no mistake, if he plays like he did during the ACN then we will have one superb player!

i must admit though j-rod looked well out of place on the wing on sat. he may take a couple of games to get used to playing there if thats what NA wants, but maybe it was just a temp measure till new signings are here.

I respect peoples opinions but the Guly bashing is boring.. he isn't the best and has no Brazillian magical touch or turn but his passing link play is accurate and his crossing was spot on on Saturday...his type of player gets into position so early he makes himself look lazy.. but he is far from it - that's why he is picked to play. Be honest there are slower, less effective in the team - Nigel has virtually said it a dozen times and he is going to add by the close of the window.
Lets support Nigel, Nicola and the back room as they close the deals and leave the picking to those who know best.. Together as One we are Southampton.... onward !!

The new lad looks like a Danny Wallace type player strong pacy and skill to burn.. Good Luck lad hope the negative mob give you a fair go.

It is very evident that NC/NA are building a young & exciting squad that will be together for potentially the next 4/5 seasons and with promising youngsters coming through the club the future looks very bright.

NC strikes me as a very hard nosed business man with little or no room for sentiment. For this reason if NC does not see Rickie Lambert being part of the medium to long term plan then it would make sound business sense to "cash in" whilst RL's stock is high. However if RL wishes to stay then I think he has more than earned the right to remain at St Marys and fight to earn his place in the team.

I am sure item 1 on the agenda is survival in the Premiership this season and throughout the posts from those supporters who are able to attend matches there is a common concern about the defence. The foundation of all of the great teams of the past has been a solid defence and I wait, not a little nervously, with great anticipation over the next couple of days to see how the defensive frailties are addressed.

Well, yes, this DID come out of left field, although as someone mentioned above, he had been linked with us some time ago.

Like Bob, I will reserve judgment for now, but I did watch a little of the ACN and he was one of several Zambians who looked very good.

One thing to remember, the ACN comes around every two years and top clubs have to make do without for a few weeks. So, once he's settled in, he'll probably hold down a regular starting spot, but in early 2013 (early this time to fit in with the World Cup), we'll lose him for a time.

A question: Is this one down to Jaidi's charm? If so, big fella (no, not THAT one), I salute you.

Saturdays' game showed what pace can do.
Both Wigans goals were that evidence.
Some saying on here that we have too many forwards, sorry, you can't have enough!
It is a long season, every game will be a cup final.
Injuries and lost form will inevitably come.
Goals win games.
Now that said the best teams have the best defenses, the back bone of the team.
Left back and Centre back are a major worry to Saints future in this league.
I also have complete faith in this management team to put that right this week.
Then we will be cooking.
Great confidence booster, last nights' win.

Remember, Nige is a Sun Tzu deveotee and Sun Tzu said "Be subtle to the point of formlessless; be mysterious to the point of soundlessness - and thereby be the director of the opponent's fate."

I think this means at least two top flight defenders - unless of course Nige is bearing in mind Confucius's maxim: "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.", in which case I'm very puzzled.

Anyhow, on other matters, my Uncle Tian has just e mailed me to say that Poopey have signed Yu Stin Ki Pu.

Cebu? Weather forecast Tonight Thunderstorms, Tomorrow Thunderstorms. Friday Cloudy. Saturday Chance of Thunderstorm. Sunday Chance of Thunderstorm. Sounds a cracking place to be in. Flashin the pan seems pretty apt.

We will have so many forwards will be able to play a 1-10 formation !!

No matter. We are putting together an awesome squad.. beware all ye who dare to mock us .. we are gpoimng to make a hell of an impact once the final team design is in place.

Welcome and the best of luck to all the new players. !

As for Ricky, my heart says I hope he stays as he is a talisman and icon of our return to greatness. BUT My head knows that NC is all about good business and if he gets a strong strike force and can get a top price for Lambert I reckon he will go. Sad but true.

In the meantime I hope he stays and teams up with the 500 attacking combination options we are building up.

This is a very good signing for Southampton. I'm from Zambia and Mayuka is very highly thought of.

He will definitely bring something different to the likes of Billy Sharp and Ricky Lambert whom I have followed since his time at my local club Bristol Rovers.

He will have to toughen up for the premiership as he is prone the odd trip to the floor but otherwise a very good acqusition for you guys and I think he will only get better under the guidance of Mr Adkins. He is a good learner.
He will score spectacular goals for you that's for sure as he is handy with both feet and head. He can canjur up something out of nothing and a player who can change a game in an instant. A real diamond in the rough IMO.

I agree, although some small minded people on here think because they are a STH. or been supporers for 40 or 50 years, or been to ten away matches in a season they are more of a supporter than any one else .

Many years ago I asked a wise man what makes a saints supporter.
He sad listen closely young tongdii and I will tell you.
'Machester United and some other teams fans support their team from birth to death.'

'Liverpool and some other teams fans support their team from the womb to the tomb .'

But a Southampton supporter, supports the Saints from the Erection until the Reserection.

so my unlce and cousin who moved to oz 20+ years ago are `plastics` are they? whenever they can they watch us on tv and always watch the highlights. before he left for oz my uncle spent 30+ years going to nearly every home and lots of away games with me my dad and cousin. my cousin came back for the first time in 20 years this year and managed to get a game in at sms with his three sons and wife. i take it you would be happier if they hadnt got the tickets. the attitudes of some on here to fans abroad baffles me. you dont know their history and if they used to go to games, giving money to the club. saints fans all around the world are welcome here imo and are welcome to make whatever comment they like, we are all saints fans and going to games because you can dont make you a bigger or better fan than those who for whatever reason are unable to.

I have been a Saints fan probably long since you were born! I was there in '76 too as a spotty faced 13 year old. I get to at least 5 games a year, despite the fact I have lived here for 25 years! Any supporter is a good supporter, as long as they support the mighty Saints.

It really does not matter where they live or how many games they go to.

I do have a season ticket now and I had one for many years prior, but due to circumstances (young children) there was a few years where I couldn't afford or get the time to go. But I can assure you I was at as many games I could get to and I was no less emotionally involved due to my absence. When I did go my support and love of the game was as high as ever. Now I do have a season ticket again and it is easy to take it for granted, well I don't.

Southampton will only grow with support. I am really proud that we have supporters across the globe, surely this is a good thing. I have met fans from New Zealand through to the USA and one thing in common is that they are so positive and enjoy every minute of the games they attend.

Everyone is welcome with open arms and hopefully we will attract many more in the coming years, because if there is, it means our club is being successful.

Onward and upwards.

I beg to disagree with your thought. I have a considerable portfolio as a saints fan covering 46 years home and away and Welcome fans from all over the world , westford has shown his credentials but even if he was plastic, that would be fine. The reason I say this is that plastics contribute vast amounts of money to the enviable coffers of man u. and if we can command such income both in shirt sales , overseas tv rights etc then the future really is bright. I have no doubt that man u's plastic brigade all over the world bring in far more than the gate receipts so I re-iterate. A saints fan i A SAINTS FAN

Kissmya, in some brilliant responses above, I think you have your answer. We are united as one.

My cousins in Oz come from Southampton and aren't footy fans. In a moment of madness during an extended stay in Hants, one of them spent a few weeks working in Gosport, where she met, fell in love with and, eventually, married ........

....................
......... a skate!!!!! (the shame of it!)

Long ago, he emigrated to Melbourne and, as far as I know, even living with (and amongst) hard-working Sotonians, he's still a work-sky, brain-dead skate. The point is, wherever we end up, whatever way we support our team, some things stay in the blood and remain part of us till we die.

So, next time you're on the train home from Newcastle after watching the Saints, asking yourself if there can possibly be any other Saints fan in history who is or has been as loyal as you and wondering what time you'll get home to bed, think about the ones across the world who got up half way through the night to follow the Saints alone and in the dark.

As for the skate, well, at least he didn't marry his sister!

I'd never consider myself "plastic". The amount of money I have spent down the years supporting and following Saints, I shiver at the thought.

I have educated many Yanks on "soccer" as the "EPL" has grown in statue here and as we now get EVERY PL game on the telly, most live, a lot of people will now get to see Saints week in week out. That is great for us to increase our fan base.

This weekend, 8 of us will watch the Saints take on Man U, live! 6 are supporting Saints, 4 have already bought this years Saints shirt, those 4 are yanks.

I do my part, a Saints fan for life, even though I live 3500 miles away.

I thought this kind of nasty inbred **** slapping was reserved for that lot down the other end of the M27, thought we were better than all that, clearly some are no better.

A few years back i attended the 30th anniversary dinner at the guildhall and nearly all my boyhood heroes were there (Ozzie had sadly just passed away) but the FACup was there and you could have your picture taken with it. I found myself stood next to none other than Peter Rodrigues. I enquired "having your picture taken with the cup again peter?" he replied " Yes its my cup! I won it!", After a chat I shook his hand and said i just wanted to thank him for that day. "It was one of the best days of my life" I said. His response "And mine! And mine!"

Mayuka first came to the fore while aged only 16 at the canada under 20 youth world cup where Zambia beat the likes of Spain and Mayuka became a house hold name in Zambia. He won the Golden boot award at the last Africa cup which Zambia won in February 2012. He won the golden boot ahead of Didier Drogba, Ghevinho, Yaya Toure, Demba Ba, Musa Saw, Papiss Cisse etc. He tied with Didier Drogba, and fellow team mate Christopher Katongo but got the golden boot on account of having an extra assist and having played less minutes since he only came on as a sub in the semi final win against Ghana which a mayuka clever strike took zambia to the final.
