Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic are expected to start in the centre of defence for Manchester United against Saints this weekend.

After undergoing a summer ankle operation, Evans was on the bench for the Fulham game.

He came through an Under-21 league outing against Tottenham on Wednesday to at least ensure Michael Carrick will not be required to continue in his emergency central defensive role.

Darren Fletcher featured in the same game.

And Ferguson confirmed the Scotland skipper will head north during the international break to train with his national side as he continues his rehabilitation.

“Darren has put all the weight back on,” said Ferguson.

“He is back to his normal weight from three years ago.

“He is training well every day. I think he is going up to Scotland again next week.

“He did really well the other night. I don't know where it places him because with the condition he has it is a question of wait and see.

“But if he keeps doing as well as he is doing, he will come into consideration.”
