Latest

  • Saints lose 3-1 at Everton
  • Gaston Ramirez headed Saints into an early lead
  • Leon Osman and Nikica Jelavic (2) turned the match round

4:51pm

FULL-TIME: Everton 3 Saints 1

4:50pm

CHANCE: Howard palms away Lambert's goalbound header in the 84th minute, as Saints attempt to launch a late fightback.

4:32pm

CHANCE: Ramirez goes so close to reducing the deficit, dinking the ball over Howard, only for it to drift the wrong side of the far post in the 69th minute.

4:27pm

CHANCE: Gazzaniga does well to tip Mirallas' shot from the edge of the area wide, after the midfielder was given time and space to control and shoot in the 67th minute.

4:18pm

CHANCE: Fellaini hits a deflected shot from 25 yards that fizzes inches wide of the post in the 57th minute.

3:47pm

Half-time: Everton 3 Saints 1

3:40pm

GOAL: Everton 3 Saints 1 (Jelavic 38):  Saints have been coming under significant pressure from the home side. Seconds after Gazzaniga had made a stunning save from a Jelavic header, he is beaten at the back post by the striker, who nods in Seamus Coleman's cross for his second of the match.

3:35pm

GOAL: Everton 2 Saints 1 (Jelavic 32):  Everton carve Saints apart with a lovely move to take the lead. Mirallas and Fellaini exchange passes in midfield, with the former then playing in Jelavic. He finishes with a left foot shot across goal into the bottom corner.

3:28pm

GOAL: Everton 1 Saints 1 (Osman 25): Nikica Jelavic can't convert Kevin Mirallas' cross from the right, but the ball falls kindly for Leon Osman, who strokes it into the top corner from close range.

3:14pm

CHANCE: Saints should be 2-0 up. James Ward-Prowse knocks a ball down the right flank in the 11th minute, which Jay Rodriguez latches on to. The striker nods the ball forward and bears down on goal, only to pull his shot tamely wide with just Howard to beat.

3:09pm

GOAL: Everton 0 Saints 1 (Ramirez 6):  Adam Lallana's corner eludes Tim Howard and the rest of the Everton defence, leaving an unmarked Gaston Ramirez to head in from about a yard out. That's the £12m Uruguayan's first goal for the club.

2:57pm

The teams are out on the pitch at Goodison Park. Kick-off is just moments away. We will have updates of the key incidents for you throughout the match.

2:19pm

Three changes for Saints today from the team that beat Aston Villa 4-1 last weekend. Danny Fox, Morgan Schneiderlin and Jason Puncheon all drop out of the side. In come Frazer Richardson, James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez. Nathaniel Clyne is expected to start at left-back, while Paulo Gazzaniga will continue in goal.

Just one change for Everton. Victor Anichebe drops out of the team to be replaced by Nikica Jelavic.

2:13pm

SAINTS:  Gazzaniga, Richardson, Fonte, Yoshida, Clyne, Davis, Lallana, Ward-Prowse, Rodriguez, Ramirez, Lambert.

Subs:  Davis, Hooiveld, Reeves, Chaplow, Do Prado, Puncheon, Mayuka.

EVERTON: Howard, Neville, Jagielka, Heitinga, Baines, Mirallas, Osman, Coleman, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jelavic.

Subs:  Mucha, Oviedo, Distin, Gueye, Vellios, Anichebe, Duffy.

Referee:  Lee Probert (Wiltshire)

1:35pm

(Rickie Lambert) was in my attention when he was at Bristol Rovers. Round that time we were looking around the leagues to see and we took Jermaine Beckford when Rickie was just about to go to Southampton. We were well aware of him and his goalscoring and he had done great. It is great credit to the boys who come through the leagues - it shows a great deal of hunger and perseverance to get through to the top and he's done that. There are a few - Grant Holt comes to mind - who have shown that route can be done. You can get released and it does not mean it is the end. What you have to do is go away and work at your game and what Rickie has done over the years is keep scoring goals wherever he has been. He deserves credit from working his way up from the bottom to the top.

David Moyes

1:33pm

Goodison Park has a great atmosphere. They are passionate football supporters there so I am looking forward to it because there will be a great atmosphere. It is a tough game and one we are looking forward to. Goodison Park is a real challenging place to go. I am from Merseyside, I've been there on numerous occasions and you know that the supporters there are very passionate. They demand the players do well and Everton are probably having the best start they've had for many, many years. I think David Moyes has done a great job there if you look at it. You talk about stability, he has been there for over 10 years now. There is a stable, good working relationship between the chairman and the manager. There is stability and continuity with the players. They know how they want to play and I must say that they are very, very effective with how they play. I think they are going to be right up there come the end of the season. They play good football and very effective football. Over a period of time they've been able to learn, to evolve and keep improving and that has been demonstrated by the start they've had this season.

Nigel Adkins

1:30pm

EARLY TEAM NEWS:  Striker Nikica Jelavic is expected to be restored to Everton's starting line-up, after recovering from a leg injury. Fellow forward Victor Anichebe has a chest infection, while Seamus Coleman and Steven Naismith are also doubts. Tony Hibbert and Darron Gibson are still out.

1:26pm

EARLY TEAM NEWS: Saints will be without Jack Cork, who is expected to miss the next four-to-six weeks after sustaining a knee injury in Tuesday's win over Sheffield Wednesday. The midfielder is set to be joined on the sidelines by Tadanari Lee, who has an elbow problem. Luke Shaw (illness) and Emmanuel Mayuka (ankle) are both doubts.

1:23pm

Good afternoon and welcome to the Daily Echo's blog covering this afternoon's Premier League contest between Everton and Saints at Goodison Park. Nigel Adkins' side are looking for a second consecutive victory in the competition, having got their first points of the season in last Saturday's 4-1 win against Aston Villa, at St Mary's. Saints were also handed a further confidence boost with a 2-0 success against Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday. We will have the teams for you later, as well as updates throughout the match.

Is Spiderman injured?

Will Jay actually be up front or wide in a five-man midfield, with Rickie as the lone striker?

Or, are we playing 4-1-2-1-2? Sounds more like a helpline number to me!

Not a great day. Don't know what was up with t'Internet but I only managed 5 mins of the live link, and updating various threads has been somewhat erratic.

As for the match, not an easy game, but would have loved a result after the great start.

From the little I saw and read, it sounds like Gazza and Gaston did okay and we might have got back into it second half.

So, they're 3 positives.

As for the one negative - clearly, we have to stop scoring from friggin' corners! :)

First 15 minutes we owned it. Then for a twenty five minute poor spell where we lost our accuracy and they took us apart.

For the rest of the game we held our own and found some positivity. Not a game to fret about but one to build on.

Pienaar and coleman were excellent for them but as with Scholes for Man U Neville at aged 35yrs was the lynch pin that really undid us in that spell.

The threads will now self destruct and football fans will get a drubbing from the negative people that can't wait to get on here when things go wrong.. Catch up for the next game :) ciao

We can all say Nigel should have played this player or employed that tactic and, sometimes, we could even be right. Alas, if any of us had been the manager these past 2 years, this season, we'd be looking forward to facing the one-month-loan-Footb

Yes I understand irony but why post a comment like that after a comment that was valid? I too would like to know why puncheon didn't start and also why he didn't come on as a sub. He has been a star 4 us and even scored last week even though it was a deflection. A fair enough question or two I think.

We're only putting the feelers out to anyone who might know why he didn't start. Ironic answers don't really get us anywhere.

Just for the record I try only to come on here when things are going well as I think it's too easy to moan.

Always thought today's game would be a difficult one and a point would have been a good result. However what I find disappointing about the season so far is that we were leading against Man City, Man Utd and now Everton only to lose all three. This must have a negative effect on both moral and confidence. A loss against Fulham and nothing from the West Ham game is now unthinkable.

I wonder why Schneiderlin wasn't picked. And that's intended as a genuine question, not a criticism of NA.
Nigel has just said on Solent that he picked up a knock at the end of the Villa match. They kept it quiet and hoped to get him fit.

He was being ironic! The point is, there are folk on here who NEVER come on when things go well. They're either skates, WUMs or just plain bl00dy miserable g!ts.

We can all say Nigel should have played this player or employed that tactic and, sometimes, we could even be right. Alas, if any of us had been the manager these past 2 years, this season, we'd be looking forward to facing the one-month-loan-Footb

all-League-11 F.C. at their shed.

So, you agree that Punch should have started. Okay, valid point from Thomas. I was surprised he didn't start.

But, who would you have left out?

Adam? Gaston? Jay? Rickie? JWP? Davis?

If, as I guess, it would have been Jay, and we'd have played one up front, a 5-man midfield - including Gaston playing behind Rickie, then would you have responded to those on here who would surely have asked why we didn't play 2 up front?

Some on here reckon we should start matches 4-4-2 (someone just asked that on Solent, in fact). Doubt that idea would get much support from any Prem manager.

Positives:
Looked good going forward
Ramirez - class and linked well with Lallana, Lamber & Ward Prowse
Ward-Prowse - had a good game
Fans - total support, superb sound and atmosphere

Negatives:
We lost shape for 20 crucial minutes, Clyne was left exposed for two of the Goals (no direct critiscism of him) but 2 on 1 left us wide open and they were ruthless.
Rodriguz - sorry very very poor, had a chance to put us 2 up and bottled it. Wasn't in the game seriously concerned about him.

It was a strange selection by Nigel today. 4 attackers (front 2, Lallana and Ramirez) and only 3 midfielders, away from home against the form team. Result was we were very exposed on the flanks. Our midfield three couldn’t get across quick enough, leaving the full backs exposed, especially Clyne.

I was also a bit surprised that he left out Hooiveld given Fellani’s strength in the air but in fact the centre backs seemed to do OK so no quibble there.

Shipping far too many goals, especially away from home, and not all of the problem is weakness in the back four, certainly not today. We are in no way good enough to play 442 away from home and for the first half today it was even more adventurous, with Ramirez apparently playing in the hole.

Quite a few positives too, good with ball, making chances, scoring rate is good and JWP and Ramirez look like being good additions. Its very early days and promoted sides usually do take time to get into their stride, so no need for any panic.

Redrobbo says...

We are not good enough to have three luxury players, Adam, Rickie and Gaston in the team when we play away from home in the Premiership. We need to take the veiw in away games that we have a point at kick off, and thats the minimum we need at 5 o'clock. Rickie is not mobile enough to run across the back four for 90 minutes. This is where we need to start our defending away from home where teams will come at us far more than at SMS. At home Ricky has been brilliant against United and Villa, away from home apart from when he came on at City he has been pretty much anonymous. We need more energy away from home to help the back four, especially the fullbacks. Chaplow and Puncheon both bring a certain energy to the team and would be ideal down the flanks to double up with the fullbacks. I think Clyne was taken off today to see if Ben Reeves is up to the job at left back so Clyne can switch back to the right. Luke Shaw is without doubt the future, but could be destroyed playing in the current team as he would be left exposed time after time. The players and management need to make the step up very quickly. That said apart from Wigan at home the results to date have gone pretty much how most of us thought they would.Winning home games against the likes of Fulham will be the key to our season

I have to say that this is one of the most sensible and intelligent comments that I have read on this or the News message boards - it's not very often that a physio or something can become a great football manager (and it pains me to say it but I think you have a class manager - who sadly I think wont survive under your MD) - but the idea that us fans know more than managers who see people train, watch DVDs of the opposition etc. is frankly ridiculous.....
There we go Stripes I'm even giving you more of my expert advice for no charge ......

I would hardly call those three players luxury, they are all mediocre championship players and always will be and that's where all of you will be stuck next year in the championship PUP, PTID

You'll also see that whilst I enjoy Saints losing (didint happen much last year - seems to be happening quit a bit this year) I also was genuinley pleased to see a south coast team in the premiership and ideally would like both teams there (can't see that happening for a while....). I have good friends that are Saints supporters and enjoy friendly rivalry - the riots after our last few games are stains on both of our clubs. I also rate your manager but dont think he'll survive under NC (I dont think he thinks he will either).

Absolutely gutted about the result, but Everton are a decent side , no point blaming the manager for his team selection or singling out individuals . Deep down I think most of us knew this season would be full of ups and downs , but nothing changes we still have loads to play for,and personally I'd still rather be in the premier league and battling to stay in the league than being in league one struggling to stay in business .Southampton till I die

Jay was accomodated today at the cost of the formation NA should have played playing away to Everton. I also wouldn't have said what Nigel said in the post match interview.. I also wouldn't have let the team wear those particular socks, or given the lads orange quarters at half time.

Sorry to say this but I think our
season is going horribly wrong. To
concede at the rate of 3 goals per game
- even against top teams - is relegation
form. It is no good keep saying we
played good football at times, we will learn from our mistakes when it is
clear we have not learnt and do not
appear to have the ability to correct
our defensive errors.
I have said before we did not, for
whatever reason, strengthen our
defense enough in the transfer
window.Others on this site agree.
In the Prem it is defenses which win
games and this is where we should
have improved first.Yes, we play
attractive football but this does not
win games as we are painfuly learning.
I shall be cheering the team on next
week as they need all the support
they can get and nobody can fault
them for effort but I have a feeling
we will suffer a 1-2 defeat to
Fulham who are a good side and
certainly no pushovers.
I also ask the question - where was
Punch today?
Some will say I am being negative but
I think this is a realistic asessment of
the situation - we just do not have the
defensive capabilities at the moment
to stay up.

Fair assessment, thing is you can't play attractive attacking football without negleting the defence. Unfortunately our defence hasn't been improved on enough (for whatever reason), I feel we will have to compromise on our attack play to help cover the defence.
Punch and spiderman are curious omissions from the villa victory team.

I don't think you're all that far wrong or all that negative, but I don't think the season is going as horribly wrong as you make out. If we'd had the same luck against Manure as Spurs had today, we'd have beaten them and, on another day we could have beaten or drawn with City. It didn't quite happen. In other matches, it will.

As for improving the defence, as we don't know how many players NC/NA tried to sign but couldn't get (getting the right players isn't the piece of cake some would have us believe - Buttner, for example), I don't think we can really pass intelligent comment.

No doubt, one more quality CB must be on NA's Christmas list.

There are no easy games in this league, so you're right about Fulham. However, with an almost fully fit squad (Spiderman out today, Lee coming back, Cork, we hope, by December), we'll do okay. I'll gladly disagree with you and predict 2-1 Saints.

I was at the game today and I have to say I spent 90 minutes laughing my arse off. Saints fans are funny.

The problem, in case none of you realised, is that Morgan was injured. The difference between the sides was a fifteen minute spell in the first half in which they cut through our midfield at will. Morgan would have stopped that. But hey ho, we move on...

Just watched highlights on motd, everton were the hot knife, saints the butter. Fair enough we had some passages of fine play but even the match stats with shots, possession, corners etc don't bode well.
I think the reason we didn't sign defenders is because Adkins isn't defensive minded, which is reflected by how the team plays. 1st goal, the actual defenders could have done better but other 2 were everton running from deep unchallenged with saint players giving their markers far too much room, almost inviting the attack. If you gave my granny that much room she would create chances too!
Roller coaster season with plenty of peaks n troughs lays ahead, just hope we manage to score more than the opposition!

Just read the match report in the Daily Telegraph. Looks like Saints were a complete shambles. The defence has to be sorted. Shipping an average of 3 goals a game simply isn't acceptable even at this level. That is a 114 in the season. The average number of goals conceded by relegated teams over the past seasons is 74. In those seasons the team finishing 17th has each let in 66 goals. I know they are only statistics but based on this Saints must, in the remaining 32 games, let in no more than 3 goals per 2 games. That is half the current rate. Does no make good reading. Always thought the pundits pre season were wrong in making Saints favourite for a quick return to the Championship and that NA would be 1st Premiership manager sacked. Unfortunately they might well be right.

OK it was a tactic that didn't work out, I am puzzled too, but it was probably an attempt to change things after losing Spider, only NA will know, but when we scored first, it looked like it might have been working, if JRod had buried the 2nd the whole game may have been different, it was that "funny" 15 minutes before half time that did the damage and that was mainly down to the lack of a dedicated left back leaving big gaps down the right, a change of tactics at half time addressed that, but it was too late by then.

The defence has got to be sorted. Right. Someone better let Adkins know - he probably doesn't realise that this is the problema and we are shipping too many goals.

Whilst it is obvious we are shipping too many goals and hopefully this will be addressed on the training ground, you can make statistics say anything as we know.

We have been scoring goals at almost 2 a game (against the best sides in the division) so just based on that over the last few seasons we'd also end up as the 4th or 5th highest scorers. Thats European form. That does make good reading.

You have to build from the back and unfortunately Adkins hasn't done that which will lead to his demise in this league. A championship defence was never going to work in this league. And changing our system was never going to help our cause. Is Nigel good enough? Personally I don't think so. There's no room for sentiment in football.

Fair enough. I respect your opinion. I do think Adkins is good enough. And I think it is far too early to make judgements on whether we'll survive or not. At this point I feel we will though. Back in the days of the Dell our defence was never very good and our away form was awful - but we still survive on many ocassions

But we signed Clyne and Yoshida, and attempted to sign Buttner.

I am sure your comment about someone telling NA about our defence has problems was tongue in cheek. I sincerely hope so!

After every game (Aston Villa excepted) it has been said lessons will be learnt. They may well be addressing the defensive problems on the training ground but unfortunately it only counts on match days.

2 goals scored per game (against top sides) does I agree make excellent reading but what is the point if the opposition score 3.

Our next two games - Fulham & West Ham - will I believe define our season and hopefully will yield at least 4 points. That I think will be the least NC will accept before taking dramatic take action.

Don't think NC will take drastic action against NA. They seem to have a strong relationship. It would be absolute disaster to get rid of NA.

Please accept that I have no wish for NA to be sacked as I fervantly believe that stabilty at mangerial level is vital and NA has had two excellent seasons and fully deserves his chance at the "big time". However I also believe there is little sentiment in the game today and NC comes from a banking background where the word "sentiment" isn't even in their dictionary.

Mr Adkins needs to be given time.

The alternative could well be a return to an unstable football club and all that goes with it. Remember the Dark Lord Rupert and his efforts?

On another subject. Are there any schools in Portsmouth? I do seriously wonder given the content of some of their supporters comments on this site. Having said that I have great respect for their manager who is without doubt doing a very good job under difficult circumstances in a very dignified manner.

Totally disagree Osprey. Was not down to us not having recognised left back. And there was nothing "funny" about that 15 mintues.

what a piece of work you are! if you dont rate fox thats ok, i think he is ok, a lot of full backs in the prem are not great defenders! some have even had great international careers glen johnson for a start.
you are either a wum, skate or you know nothing about saints!
so we should send out j-rod on loan and get billy back? it is understood by many that billy couldnt settle down south and has no pace, j-rod has limited game time most of which has been on the wing. like most strikers j-rod is a form player, remember beattie?, and once he has a goal or 2 in the prem will be quality, problem he has is rickie is scoring well and takes the main strikers place, so adkins would have to go 4-4-2 for j-rod to play in position and most dont like that formation.
T. lee is injured! hurt his elbow on int break, most saints fans know that of course as it has been widely reported in the press and saints forums.

It's not that we haven't got a recognised left back , it's the fact that whoever is playing in front of him is not doing his job.
Everton were quicker than us they closed us down when we had it and attacked with pace when they had it.
We never closed them down.
They at times had two unmarked players on the right wing so Clyne was out numbered.
I was at the game and I can't honestly tell you who was meant to be playing in front of him, I think it was Lallana but he was all over the place.
A few weeks ago someone on here defended Fox saying he was getting no help from the guy in front of him well I think he was right.
Lallana is not delivering in my opinion, he is trying too many clever tricks ,he should go back to basics.
If we had scored the second before they scored it might have been a different outcome, the same happened against Man U when we were 2 - 1 up.
We have got to be more clinical. because it is very hard to come back when you miss chances and then concede three goals in 15 min.

Disappointing result but not, in my opinion, meriting some of the extreme negative comments especially regarding NAs future. We are not in the relegation zone (quite)in spite of having played some of the best teams in the league. However I would concede that the situation will be ominous if there are no further points after the next two games. I personally do not think NA is the best manager for the Club in the Premiership but hopefully will be proved wrong. He does seem unable to bring players off the bench or change tactics when things are not going right. It seems we bought a number of players almost in panic and they are yet to come togther as a cohesive unit not to mention the further strengthening needed in defence. The situation we find ourselves in now (if I am allowed an opinion) stems from the failure of both NC and NA to do the necessary business during the close season.

Sounds fair enough, it is something that can be addressed, any thoughts on Boruc replacing Gazza or was he not to blame? Again we had no bookings, is that down to a lack of aggression or are we just disciplined in that department, it is unusual that an away team doesn't pick up a caution or two?

i thought you were right earlier as it goes, we had some really good chances and didnt put them away, everton did. i thought it would be tough to get a win against everton yesterday and would have settled for a draw, however we lost so on to the next game. after being around the top of the league for the last 2 seasons i think some of our `new` supporters think we should be doing the same this year, that was never going to happen, we wont go down and will finish around 14th this season, we can then push on and improve the squad next summer ready to get a top 10 finish.

Playing in the Premiership is a world apart from the other three leagues.
Saints were good going forward.
Great teams get their men behind the ball, Saints didn't and were left yards and yards behind, chasing the heels of the Everton midfield every time they attacked.
Great teams, have great defences and do not leak goals
The chance to strengthen the defence and goalkeeper was lost in the close season that cannot be undone., so what can we do now?
The best defence the Saints ever had was when Hoddle was in charge.
If NC really wants to back NA and not sack him, he could do far worse than appoint Hoddle as Nigel's assistant ---NOW!

what a piece of work you are! if you dont rate fox thats ok, i think he is ok, a lot of full backs in the prem are not great defenders! some have even had great international careers glen johnson for a start.
you are either a wum, skate or you know nothing about saints!
so we should send out j-rod on loan and get billy back? it is understood by many that billy couldnt settle down south and has no pace, j-rod has limited game time most of which has been on the wing. like most strikers j-rod is a form player, remember beattie?, and once he has a goal or 2 in the prem will be quality, problem he has is rickie is scoring well and takes the main strikers place, so adkins would have to go 4-4-2 for j-rod to play in position and most dont like that formation.
T. lee is injured! hurt his elbow on int break, most saints fans know that of course as it has been widely reported in the press and saints forums.
do you want adkins gone? why?
LOL im neither a WUM or a skate, have been a season ticket holder for the past 10 years and was at Forest Away we were already relegated to league 1... was you?

Correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure taking fox off last weekend completely changed the game and his attacking so far this season has also been woeful.

Yes i do remember "one season wonder" Beattie! I bet you were one of them people who thought Neil Mccan was a good player and travel away with saints travel eating boiled eggs telling people to keep quiet on the coach!

As for J-Rod i hope he proves me wrong but he is definetely not worth £7million IMO, Michu at Swansea would have been a much better and cheaper aquisition. And if he isn't happy playing in that position, what was the point in signing him?

Didnt say i wanted Adkins gone, but i really dont think NC will put up another loss next week.

no i think taking fox off was a factor last week but i dont think it was the only factor! moving clyne to left back instead of richardson (who could have gone there) was another. i dont like boiled eggs, never have, i also dont travel to away games by coach, last time i went to a game by coach was the 86 cup semi at white hart lane v liverpool. no i wasnt at the forest game, i have gone to many games since the early 80`s infact i used to go to every home game and most away for most of the 80`s and 90`s work permitting, even in the bad days of branfoot! however since becoming disabled early 03 i have been unable to go to many games at all, last season i managed 4, this season i got wigan in but had to give the manure ticket away. but i dont need to explain myself to you or anyone and i dont need to say i am a season ticket holder to make myself look good and think that my opinion is better than others! (i know not being a season ticket holder makes my views invalid to the likes of you, but i dont really care!).
if you cant see the point of signing j-rod then you are a fool! especially as i told you before, j-rod has been brought in to replace lambert,£6mill now is nothing for a player who could be worth £15-20+ in a few years time. if rickie picks up an injury or a suspension then j-rod will play. in the mean time he will be picked out of position or for cup games to keep him match fit and to keep rickie on his toes. michu? a midfielder instead of a striker! strange choice. the choice would have been michu or gaston, i would rather have gaston. whats mccan got to do with anything? i mentioned beattie only as he is the best example of a saints striker who thrived on confidence!
do you know NC then or are you just guessing about him not putting up with another loss next week?
as others have said, your comments regarding Fox are disgraceful and no saints fan i know would ever say that or do that! and you should be ashamed that you posted it!

But we signed Clyne and Yoshida, and attempted to sign Buttner.
We are lacking in defence and our spending was prodominantly on forwards/attacking players, thick end of £20m!
Defending starts from attack and should spread through the team when we aren't in possession. Too many times from what I have seen, teams run thru us and we don't look like we are marking close enough. Teams are rolling us over literally. When you have opposition walking past players then onto our defence which isn't the greatest at the best of times it's a bit of a worry.

Have to agree - we seem to have had a "kid in a sweetshop" approach, buying and playing all the tasty morsals and leaving the boring ones (CB, LB and MF workhorses) on the backshelf. I hate to say it but NA got it very wrong yesterday and despite what is said does not to appear to have learned from mistakes - the flanks have been a problem since the City game and Rodriguez is totally lost there (Gary Neville - "he needs to start putting in a shift in front of Danny Fox") - and its not just the "moaner" on here but the pundits who are picking up on the same points. NA has done a fab job for us and no one is slagging him off, most of the pundits have praised him and most of the fans are behind him as per the Villa game - we are just playing "club manager" which is what we used to do down the pub before the web and gadget age (even Lawrie Mac used to get moaned at for some of his decisions and we were top 6 then)but if we don't learn quickly attitudes will change in all quarters - football is like politics, a week is along time. Its just surprising that a former goalkeeper and a well respected analyst in NA doesn't appear to be dealing with the issues. Hope to be proved wrong in due course and will be fully behind the team next Sunday.
