Southampton hoping to improve Premier League record against London clubs
1:16pm Wednesday 17th October 2012 in Saints News
IT is a litany of woe that Saints hope to end when they return to London on Saturday.
Saints beat West Ham when they last played a Premier League game at Upton Park ten years ago, James Beattie scoring the only goal in the final minute.
But Saints lost their previous four Premier League games at West Ham without getting on the scoresheet.
And they return on Saturday hoping for their first win in the capital in 12 attempts.
Not since the 3-1 vanquishing of Spurs in September 2003 - a result that prompted the sacking of Glenn Hoddle – have Saints left London with three Premier League points.
Saints have only notched three top-flight victories in their last 33 visits to the Big Smoke, a 4-2 win at Chelsea on New Year’s Day 2002 being their only other 21st century Premier League success in the capital.
Beattie was on the scoresheet in all three of those London wins, netting twice at Spurs and another brace at Stamford Bridge, pre-Roman Abramovich.
They are precious memories amidst a disastrous record of 20 defeats in 33 matches.
Two 6-1 hammerings at Arsenal - at Highbury a few days before the sides contested the 2003 FA Cup final and at the Emirates last month - and a couple of thrashings at Spurs (5-1 and 7-2) have contributed to the concession of 70 goals in that time.
Saints' record against London clubs in the Premier League since 2000:

L Arsenal 6-1 (15/9)

0-0 for me. Just because we have to keep a clean sheet eventually and their defence is pretty good this season.

1-1 Wet Spam
3-2 Milwall
2-0 Crystal Palace
Or the year before with:
1-1 Charlton
2-0 Orient
3-0 Brentford
Year before 4 draws. Can't be bothered to look further back.
I normally don't go with the Daily Echo Negativity conspiracy theory but the headline could just as well have been "Saints look to continue ten game London away unbeaten streak"
Pshaw!

We could, however, employ the "Litany of the Saints". Fans at Wet Spam should remember though that "Ora pro nobis" invokes one Saint but "Orate pro nobis" invokes the whole team. We wouldn't want those ill educated East End dregs taking the p!ss out of our command Latin.

And the squad (and performances so far) are easily good enough to stay up this season. No need to panic at all. Survival this season, consolidation the next, then looking to push for a UEFA spot by 2016.

COYR - get a win on Saturday & let's see if the Echo will then put out a positive Saints headline at 5pm!

Wet Spam are rubbish, and Saints will batter them.

Born a Spurs fan, but lived down here as a nipper for a bit and saw Shearer, Flowers, Ruddock, Benali (!) etc at the Dell a few times, so I've always had a soft spot for Saints and wanted you back in the prem. Real shame that the Redknapp thing caused some bad blood between the clubs.

Nonetheless, I do think you've got a decent squad, easily good enough to stay up. In addition, you seem to have one of the best youth coaching setups in the country, and if you can carry on bringing talent through like you have (whether they stay with you or are sold to fund development), then you'll have nothing to fear, and should be looking to push on in the future. Adkins has done a great job so far - and has you playing attractive football to boot - it will take him a season to work out the Premiership, but after that I'd not be surprised to see him talked about in the same way that Brendan Rogers and Paul Lambert were last year. Hope the board keep faith with him.
There's only two games each season that I want you lot to lose. ;-)
(plus cups :-D)

Hammers are a very strong physical team, who aren't afraid to put it about and with Cole and Carroll up front they will overrun Saints poor defence.
I think Hammers will win by two clear goals.
I expect the happy clappies will say the boorer is at it again but a critical friend is more helpful to a person or Company
than a sycophant.
Let's be fair this column is full of sycophants who think NC walks on water, the sun shines out of NA's backside and every Saints' player is the best in the World!
Before the season started I said that the defence and goalkeeper needed to be strengthened, after 2 games I said that NA needed someone with PL experience to lean on.
With 4 points from a possible 21, I've been proved right.
My views on NC are supported by MLT, one of the greatest players ever to wear a Saints' shirt and once worshipped by the same happy clappies who are now scoffing at his views, how fickle can some people be?
If, as I predict Saints get hammered on Saturday, NA's future with the Saints will be in great danger, not from the vast majority of supporters but from NC who would sack him in the blink of an eye, just as he did the programme sellers who were supporting and serving Saints before he was born!

Interesting approach, to cite our record against teams in the capital in the Premier League rather than looking more recently, like last year, when our results were:
1-1 Wet Spam
3-2 Milwall
2-0 Crystal Palace
Or the year before with:
1-1 Charlton
2-0 Orient
3-0 Brentford
Year before 4 draws. Can't be bothered to look further back.
