On my stroll this week to the pond, I happened to see something that made me freeze in my tracks.
I was sat on the single solitary bench (only ever seeming to be able to accommodate one person- what a polite society we are!) and I was watching the pigeons fly in, fly out, fly in, fly out when I was startled by the rustling in the bushes.
Contrary to popular belief, it was NOT the secret, covert undercover fishing squad who seem to think no one can see them, but in fact was a mob of unruly rats making their way toward a small pile of bread, balanced carefully on top of a fence post.
I am not naive, I DO watch Sir David with his nature documentaries and I am aware of the urban jungle we have created for ourselves however I do not think I would be the only one fascinated to see rats teetering atop 3.5 ft fences, scrambling up briars and chicken wire, to form an offensive to the softly waiting bread and to finally dash away in a flurry of fur and tail.
I make my apologies to the ducks who went unnoticed and the swans (whose signets are doing very well thank you) and the moorhens (one of which was nibbling a mouldy fish) and say "Bravo!" to the rats, making me feel affection for the animal underclass and underdogs.
Nevertheless, I am wondering: has anyone else seen them?
