It’s not about taking part, it’s about winning

IT’S been a week of winners, from Mike Finn and Drew Farminer in the snooker pairs final through to the Queen of the Green Baize claiming her record seventh world title.

But let’s start with Park Gate RBL B securing the Premier title due to Totton Rec B winning 7-3 at Hythe Club instead of the 8-2 they required for promotion to the Super League.

The fact that Totton Rec B don’t list the Super League in their list of ten best things had nothing to do with the results.

Park Gate captain Paul Tavender was cock-a-hoop. But he refuses to strengthen his side – preferring to stick with the lads he knows and loves and bickers with.

“The best thing about my team is we all enjoy playing snooker,” he said. “It's a great game.

“Whilst I could probably draft in some people to strengthen us if I wanted to, I won’t - as we are happy as we are. Obviously, we will need to up our games to compete against the best teams around but I wouldn’t put it past us.”

Nine days ago Finn and Farminer defeated Billy Castle and Adam Nash 3-1 in the pairs final at Shirley Cons.

The double champions have lost only three frames in ten matches in two seasons.

As Finn said: “Three frames dropped in two years, it says a lot really.”

Nash, a beaten finalist with Terry Azor in 1999, and Castle dropped no frames up to the final.

Two days before the final, Finn and Mark McLean lifted the Winchester league’s pairs title.

Finn explained the difference between singles and pairs: “Everyone misses. When you come to the table, you’ve got no rhythm.

“You can go for balls when you’re playing on your own and you’ve only got yourself to blame. But when you’re playing with someone else you want to try and play the right shots.”

And then at high noon on Wednesday we had the big one.

The global audience on USTREAM peaked at 41 as Reanne Evans wrapped up a 5-1 victory over Emma Bonney in the Greene King World Ladies Snooker Championship final in Bury St Edmunds.

And we had commentary – of a sort - although Hannah had to take over when Mark went for his dinner.
