Ed Lait (Letters, September 30), says that Southampton Cycling Campaign supports proposals for the Itchen Bridge and roundabout (city side) that are part of the Eastern Corridor Cycle Route.

Southampton Cycling Campaign took no part in the design of this route; we were not asked to provide a representative on the working party. Details of the route were presented to Southampton Cycling Campaign members at our February meeting and we have subsequently discussed various aspects of the scheme.

The Cycle Campaign represents a diverse cross-section of local cyclists of all ages and abilities; it is not uncommon, therefore, for us to have a variety of opinions on a scheme as complex as the Eastern Corridor Cycle Route. When this is the case the Campaign leaves it to members to make individual responses.

Some of the individual elements of the Eastern Corridor Cycle Route have been agreed by members of the Campaign following site visits and detailed discussion, but others are more controversial, notably the replacement of the roundabout (city side of the Itchen Bridge) with traffic lights and we intend to discuss this in greater depth at a forthcoming meeting.

Regarding the plans for the bridge, it is my understanding that the cycle and pedestrian sections will be physically segregated to minimise the possibility of pedestrian/cyclist collision.

I feel it is regretable that the council intends to push ahead at vast expense with elements of the Eastern Corridor Route that do not have the overwhelming support of local cyclists.
