I am sorry to hear that an anonymous writer has had problems with the Department of Work and Pensions (Letters, October 5).

For some time, I have been concerned about the way Government is choosing to interact with its citizens. I have had occasion to remonstrate with the Inland Revenue regarding their Capital Gains Tax “campaign” and am equally concerned about the Home Office illegal immigrant “campaign”. Let me be clear that these are concerns about means, not ends; for the means put innocent people at real risk. Has the Government declared war on its own citizens? My ward, Valley Park, is a genteel place and my constituents would not expect to be treated in this way. Your contributor ends with the phrase “authority figures we should be able to look up to, not be afraid of”. Time to step out of the shadows, you figures of fear. I am waiting to walk into the bright light of the public domain and debate with you how Government should interact with its citizens.

Councillor Andrew Beesley, Test Valley Borough Council, Chandler’s Ford.
