Labour can ill-afford jibe at the Prime Minister

Labour can ill-afford jibe at the Prime Minister

First published in Readers' Letters

COUNCILLOR David Furnell, as expected, writes a letter (Letters, January 7) offering to introduce Prime Minister David Cameron to some of the 14,500 families in our city who have to wait for a council home.

I would also like to show him the money the Labour council wasted on this city in the past and is still doing.

There are also the so-called hard-up families near where I live paying up to £25 on scratch cards every week while I can hardly afford a £2 lucky dip even though I have a full-time job.

Get off the bandwagon Mr Furnell.

MICHAEL TAYLOR, Weston, Southampton.

what a great idea by furnells Labour council in the past. give planning permission for high density housing right next to the Itchen Bridge with the chaos with or with out cruise ships in port?
it was the Tory council who persuaded the developers to cut the amount of flats & it was the Tory council that built the first council homes in a decade it was also the Tory council that planned to change Townhill Park with the residents approval.
Then it was Labour who scrapped that came back with a high density housing project got a housing association to pay to have it built then for the council to buy some off of them so spending double the money the Tories were spending ,Tories £50million Labour £100million so instead of an estate with room to breathe you end up with the prospects of a Ghetto is that Labours idea of a bright future for the residents of this city?

Goodness me Mr Taylor ....... what a very good but very selective memory you have ...... that is of course is a trait within the local conservative ranks.
.
Your memory must serve you well if you can remember where the money the Labour council wasted on this city in the past, and, evidently, according to you ... is still doing so.
.
The reason why your memory must be good is that the last overall majority that Labour ( apart from 18 months ago ) had was 1996-2000.
.
Therefore it also surprises me that you cant remember your own Tory party tossing away £5m of local taxpayers money on a White Elephant on top of a hill and a mile from the sea ...... called the Sea Museum. This was after we were told that it would cost the taxpayer nothing.
.
Yes indeed Mr Taylor ........ you do have a very selective memory indeed

mr Taylor? white elephant on a hill? wasn't it a Labour councillor called Burke who praised the sea city museum & was saying how well it was doing? if so it's hardly a "white Elephant " is it?
Why not look at the creation of two extra cabinet posts that were not needed? the scrapping of a deal that would have saved millions for both the Island & Southampton city councils!
Lets look at the restoration of pay to those above £17,500 going up to £60,000+ whilst scrapping jobs & services.
Spending £50million more than the Tories were going to spend & destroying the project at Townhill park making it into High Density housing instead of a place the residents can be proud of.
I don't know who Mr Taylor is but look at the so called Labour projects road lay out at dock gate 4 a Tory scheme, Mayflower Park a butchered scheme put forward by the Tories Central Train station area a Tory scheme, Art & Cultural centre a scheme many Labour supporters slammed when the Tories proposed it yet Labour have gone ahead with it.
Then the selling of an ailing Industrial Estate which would have cost us millions to repair & modernise OH! sorry that was done by the Tories who used £5million to pay for sea city museum & £5million to secure front line services yet Labour has put into action every thing they were saying the tories would do like cut funding to Surestart & jobs & services so again a lie to get elected.
they won with a majority? how many union members from outside this city were used to knock doors? how many letters were sent to union members telling them to vote Labour?
Wasn't there a threat saying "Vote Labour return a Labour council or face more industrial action & bins not getting empty" by the unions?
So a majority of the lowest vote in quite a while after all this pressure on the electorate isn't something to boast about is it?

Inflation down at the target set for it by the government, unemployment down.
more people since the so called bedroom tax was introduced have come off the welfare than at any time under Labour so the government again was proven right.
Let's remember the words of the local labour party before the last local elections shall we!
the Tories will cut jobs, will cut services will shut Libraries will cut funding to Surestart we won't but then a slip & Williams said he would cut far more than the Tories but after the Unions met with Labour suddenly he never said it?
Now let's see who lies Tories or Labour? Tories cut pay after giving 90 days notice which in a letter the Unions knew about.
renegotiated the level of pay this cut would start at so it went up to £22,000
& below they got a pay rise something you seem to forget about the unions & the council agreed to it & said no legal actions yet when that meeting ended the lying Unite Union broke that agreement straight away.
with those pay cuts more permanent refuse workers were taken on a grant was applied for to keep weekly collections so cutting the cost to the council minimal job losses ( temps) & no cuts to front line services & Surestart were guaranteed.
new ambitious plans of culture & new fruit & veg market a new lay out for Mayflower park a new layout for the area of the train station & talks with ABP the cruise lines hotels & historic buildings took place to one sort out the traffic problem & to highlight with a brochure to the passengers what are city had to offer.
they also built a vibrant Sea City museum whilst at the same time saved us millions in repair & up dating a Industrial site with the money to pay off the museum & give money to front line services.
So Yes Vote Tory save what pride we have left in this city & do away with this joke of a Labour council.
OH! who were the party to build the first council homes in this city in a decade? Labour? NO Tories? YES
