DOES the central station really need a makeover costing £10 million (Daily Echo, Friday 31)?

I imagine that if asked, the majority of the residents of Southampton would probably say what’s the matter with it as it is and that amount of money could be better spent on more important projects?

This tarting up of the station area is going to help us create a more welcoming arrival experience, enhancing the perception of our great city for our residents and visitors alike.

What a lot of drivel!

There will be extensive work carried out to road surfaces – (something that needs to be done across the whole of Southampton) with the possible creation of some 300 jobs. Nonsense, a contractor will be employed with a workforce in place who will carry out the task and on completion will move one.

Is it Mr Tucker’s department that came up with the idea of a Spitfire monument and an antiques centre and that hideous appendage to the Civic Centre the SeaCity Museum?

I wonder what else is planned for our great city, nothing much for the actual citizens, but more for visitors I suspect.

We need to attract manufacturing companies to Southampton, having lost so many in the past decade or so. A pretty railway station, yes that’ll do it.
