NOW that Southampton has been listed as a city for 50 years, mainly on the fact of expansiveness, the election wards need breaking into four, i.e. north, south, east and west, giving two more Members of Parliament to look after matters.

Anyone with any sense can refer back and see where this financial crisis has stemmed from.

One has yet to find out whose bright idea it was from back in the 1960s that the British State should start using decimalised currency.

Now used and proved a useless project it should be listed in the history books as something which never became a success.

Whoever holds the post as chief cashier at the Bank of England has the final word, whereby having custody of the “Gold Reserves”.

All governments which have been elected in since the 1970 General Election, how many of them bare in mind the fact that funds could be stolen and taken from accounts just by twisting figures about?

This has been progressing since decimal currency was set into circulation. Changing it back would have to be a two-stage movement as listed: Stage one: Pound notes out for pound coins. Ten shilling notes out for fifty-pence pieces. Florins out for ten pence pieces. Shillings out for five pence pieces. Pennies out for pennies.

Stage two: Half crowns, sixpences, three penny pieces, half pennies and farthings.

Just come back over the High Street bank counters when a set revaluation of the pound is reached.

For all working on behalf of the Daily Echo, the job’s done.

D. GILES, Southampton.
