I WOULD like to congratulate all Southampton pupils on their GCSE results.

The pressure our young people are under to get the grades they want is immense and should never be overlooked.

I have the utmost respect for them and their teachers.

No doubt, the siren voices of yesteryear will tell all who will listen how exams are now overly easy, that none of it matters.

To these people I say rubbish, our young people work their socks off, and we should all be in awe of their achievement.

Not only that, but this year our schools have had to contend with yet more changes being imposed by the Conservative-led Government in London.

Driven by their ideological obsession to turn the education clock back to the 1950s, Tory Ministers just can’t stop themselves from constantly moving the goalposts. Our young people deserve better.

To our young people, well done. To our teachers, thank you. To Ministers, stop your perpetual interference.

COUNCILLOR DAN JEFFERY, Cabinet Member for Education and Change (Labour), Southampton City Council.
