IN answer to the letter from Tony Maggs in last Tuesday’s Echo about the tram restoration project, I can assure him that it is alive and well.

A small group have been beavering away at our dedicated workshop in the docks.

We are concentrating our efforts on the dome roof car number 11 (similar to the Echo photo, above) which was of a special design able to pass under the Bargate.

Sadly when work is complete the tram is unlikely to stay in Southampton unless we can find somewhere for it to go on display or even run.

The workshop was popular with visitors to the Maritime Festival and Heritage open weekend, but is not normally open to casual visitors due to port security reasons.

There are two other trams in the collection awaiting time and resources to start restoration.
