IT was wonderful recently to attend a meeting between local university students, government minister Dan Rogerson, and our local Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate Ben Nicholls.

At a time when so many young people feel distanced from politics, I was hugely impressed with the range and quality of the discussion, and of their clear engagement with the important issues of the day.

It is surely the fault of politics, not young people, when the latter are disengaged. The meeting showed me and others present how much young people have to contribute when politicians take the trouble to listen.

I hope that some future government is bold enough to give young people the vote, thereby taking a real step towards engaging them better, and to find other ways of acting on the concerns faced by our younger population.
