Even though we are into pantomime season it is not for me to provide a review on the evolving events within Eastleigh Borough Council.

But following your reports on council leader Keith House, and having been involved over the years with a number of controversial issues involving this council and the consequential decline of this town, I reached a very low opinion of Mr House’s capabilities quite early in his reign.

Your recent profile of Mr House that he always seeks debate slightly contradicts what I have heard from ex-councillors and council officials. His word is law and though his style was described as ‘presidential’ others have a more pointed description associated with communist Russia or North Korea rather than an English borough council.

I always recall a Lib-Dem councillor on my door step a few elections ago begging for my vote who told me that irrespective of his personal views or those of his constituents he had to vote as the leader told him.

That brings into question what use are local councillors when they are totally subservient to the views of an individual political master.

That councillor saw the error of his ways and joined UKIP.

It’s time for Eastleigh’s overwhelming majority of passive Liberal councillors to start making their voice heard and change their leadership. It is desperately overdue.

Likewise our MP, Mike Thornton, should be more pro-active in bringing democracy and change to Eastleigh Council rather than sycophantic support to the current leader.

UKIP already target Eastleigh as one of their top ten constituencies they hope to gain at the next election. But Mr Thornton doubles as a local councillor so probably does as he is instructed by the council leader.

RICHARD MAY, Eastleigh.
