REFERRING to the letter from Mr S Woods, as you said, yes, French Street still has that name and the Onion’s Johnnies as they are known still do exist.

I saw some two to three years ago. I always think back to my own childhood and many happy years of holidays in Brittany. I am now 68.

The Onion’s are known as Les Rosies de Roscoff. We would drive to Southampton from North Yorkshire to cross on the ferry. Our car would be craned on and off the boat. Before that we would have tea in May’s Store, where a man played the piano in the restaurant and in the ladies loo there had a perfume spray – 1 spray for 6d.
