With regard to my recent letters about the Gurkhas, this will be my last correspondence on the matter.
Both Dot Smith and Bob Gentle again have missed the point: I am not decrying the Gurkhas, their reputation speaks for itself.
The facts are they are Nepalese, which is not even in the Commonwealth.
The British Military is making many British soldiers redundant; indeed, one of my sons has recently been made redundant by the Army after 19 years’ loyal service in Iraq and Afghanistan amongst others.
The Echo said recently that new accommodation may be built in Hampshire or Surrey for Gurkha veterans. Are they going to treat British veterans the same?
Why employ foreign troops when we have our own?
Britain is in debt; we cannot look after everyone. We must look at the economics.
In the Sunday Express, it says the Army is reducing to 60,000 troops; this will affect the 1st Royal Gurkha Rifles as well as 600 Gurkha specialists.
The 2nd Battalion, which is funded by Brunei, will not be culled.
I say again, I have nothing but respect for these great soldiers.
I also have great respect for the British soldier and I don’t want them made redundant while we still employ soldiers from another country and for them to have new accommodation built for their veterans but not for the British veterans.
JAMES GOOD, Dibden.
