I MUST respond to fellow Totton councillor Mike Reid (Letters, March 5). Yes, our farmers should get a reasonable return for the food they produce. However, this does not mean we shouldn't support Fair Trade on the basis that charity begins at home.

We are part of a global economy. To ignore the far more serious plight of the Third World, is not just uncharitable but against our national interest.

To be born and raised in a relatively wealthy country like Great Britain is a matter of very good fortune.

The growing success of Fair Trade products is due to a recognition that we can and should do more to help those less fortunate people who only ask only for the chance to help themselves.

Clearly, from what Cllr Reid says, there are still some elements of the Conservative party that Mr Cameron would do well to put right, COUNCILLOR DAVID HARRISON, Liberal Democrat town, district and county councillor, Totton.
