SEEING the write-up on the Bittern pub, I was disgusted.

This pub has always been a great local; I should know as I have used it for years, so when I read the rubbish that Allan Mendelsohn spouted, we know why the council and ADL Traffic haven’t had a chance.

He said that access to the restaurant would be better than it is now! So why has it not been done already? No money for the council?

If Mr Mendelsohn were to meet me, I would show him exactly where the danger comes from.

Drunks can come from pubs in town, the pub on Hinkler Road or even from their own homes and this is the same all over the country.

How many accidents involving drunks have the police been called for at the Bittern pub? Probably the average amount for any pub in the country – is he going to close them all?

How many accidents will be put down to McDonald’s name or the council?

How can Thornhill Park Road be compared to the M27? Old people, shoppers, children and all sorts use Thornhill Park Road every day; they do not walk around the M27 so how can this be compared?

My point is this: if the Bittern pub is to close and be replaced with a fast food restaurant, where will we hold the charity events that currently take place there, how can the locals and bikers continue their fund raising events without this pub?

As far as I see it, it is all about money money money, a new restaurant will cost £801,000 but repairs to the pub will only cost £273,00.

The pub is a place for locals to meet, not to make money out of people like a fast food restaurant would.

Stuart Parsons, director of Property Fleurets, said the site would not make a profit as a pub.

Why not? Maybe because the brewery would not fund the money for the upkeep? If the locals get the chance they could turn this fabulous pub around.

We don’t all rely on companies with big names.

The locals know what they want and this is not a McDonald’s.

MR J W YOUNG, Thornhill.
