WITH the General Election just around the corner it is essential not to forget that on the same day how vital the local elections are.
Local elections are the only real voice that local people have so whoever you send to Westminster make sure you choose to elect someone who will fight on the council.
Someone who will raise the issues that matter to you, who will fight and campaign alongside you, for your neighbourhood, and for our city, putting people first.
The thousands of council jobs wiped out by this Labour council will mean the challenges ahead in our neighbourhoods are immense.
The inevitable has resulted; more graffiti, fly tipping and litter, less cutting grass verges, roads and streets being neglected.
Ironically some of the very people putting themselves forward are signed up to the dismantling of local government, closing down council care homes, respite centres, libraries, leisure facilities, not willing to put up a fight whether on the council or with you on the streets campaigning with you.
Electing the right person can help prevent the running down of your neighbourhoods, picking the right person can help keep your facilities from closure, keeping them open.
Don’t believe anyone who says “we have no choice”, No matter who you want to send to Westminster in May, make sure you choose a local fighter on the council.
DON THOMAS, Independent Councillor, Southampton City Council, Coxford Ward.
