OUR daily news is understandably dominated by the forthcoming election.

We are offered a non-stop selection of almost magical economic and social claims by every political party.

After May 7 we will all be affected one way or another by the outcome. However, will it be life changing for us? No! Will it decide our long term future?

Probably not. Let’s spare a thought then, for that other item of news that is affecting the fate of thousands of men, women and children in the Mediterranean at the moment, trying to reach Europe.

Hundreds of people are dying with thousands more enduring terrible hardship to try to escape persecution and torture.

I watched a member of ‘Save the Children’ give an impassionate plea for assistance for these stricken refugees.

Ironically we are currently debating the rights and wrongs of being in the EU.

A tiny fraction of the vast financial sums all countries contribute to that monolithic autocratic club, could be used to help solve many problems and conflicts.

Thus improving the life expectancy of those thousands of people.

So while we debate a possible EU Referendum, just remember those thousands of people who are clearly giving everything to try and get into Europe.

JOHN CARTER, Southampton.
