BEFORE the election in 2010 the Liberals were a strong threat to the Conservatives.

They had some very good ideas, especially Proportional Representation.

We were then shocked to find by voting for Liberal Democrats we had enabled the Conservatives to form a Government, even though they did not have sufficient votes, and above all were not wanted by Liberal voters.

What happened to Proportional Representation? Liberals caved in at the first hurdle.

In 2015, the Conservatives got about 36 per cent of the vote. That leaves about 64 per cent of the electorate dissatisfied. Did the Conservatives know what they were doing to squash the Liberal threat once and for all? I suspect yes, they did.

The poem by Mary Howitt comes to mind: “Will you come into my parlour said the spider to the fly.”

Any other party thinking of betraying their voters should read the last two lines of this poem: “Until an evil counsellor close heart and ear and eye, and take a lesson from the tale, of the spider and the fly.”
