I HAVE read some drivel in your columns from Richard Grant, but I cannot allow his comments (Echo, June 23) that the Spitfire was “ nothing more than flying metal” referring to the Spitfire memorial which is proposed for Southampton Quay.
Had it not been for the brave pilots their ground crews who fought for this country in the Second World War I am sure neither he nor I would have had the freedom of the press to allow our thoughts to be printed.
I and many others believe that had we not won the Battle of Britain in the skies the war would have been lost, and the sacrifice of many loved ones who gave us freedom would have been in vain.
I cannot forget any of the armed forces who helped to defeat Hitler and I praise them all.
I believe that Richard Grant now owes an apology to the many he has slurred.
