Blandford (Letters, July 6) found my metaphysical meanderings into the origins of the universe interesting. But my article in no way implied that man had any involvement in evolution, it just highlighted the attempts being made to discover how it began.

Whether the giant Hadron Collider in Switzerland will discover the elusive Higgs Boson or not is a matter of conjecture.

Scientists are extremely optimistic of eventual success.

Indeed, as Alan suggests, they may well find a little old man with a screwdriver looking quite puzzled.

But what I am quite sure they won’t discover is a white bearded gentleman in a long white gown with a resplendent halo aloft, sitting on a thrown and surrounded by winged plump cherubs.
