I READ with concern that GE Aviation has given eviction notice to Follands Sports and Social Club at the end of December, 2016.

The area of sports facilities involved was originally Hamble Parish recreation ground and during the war and some of the employees of Follands used the area for a “kick about” in their lunch break, and as a teenager I joined in the fun.

Until the late 1950s Follands SC used the land to the west of this site.

This is where I played both football and cricket, and have in my possession a photo of the 1951/52 football team.

The land now under threat was part of a deal between Hamble Parish Council and Follands Aircraft which exchanged Westfield Common for the recreation ground, and it was reported at the time Mr HP Folland gave a commitment that should the sports field not be required it would be offered back to the parish council, but I understand that no records have been found to confirm this agreement.

What we do know is that a covenant exists which prohibits any building on the land which is used for overnight accommodation.

Hamble has already lost five sports fields to development and I sincerely hope that this facility can be saved from extinction as it is important to encourage both young and elderly to keep fit and enjoy the facilities for years to come.

If any of your readers can elaborate on my comments or give further information about the “swap” of land I would be most grateful.
