I WAS interested to read Lawrie McMenemy's version of why Terry Paine and himself did not get on when Lawrie took over at the Dell.

I believe it was inexperience on Lawrie’s part that the pair fell out.

Terry had been with the Saints since 1956, had seen the club rise to division one and played a huge part of that success.

He also played in the winning world cup squad when England triumphed in 1966.

I believe Terry’s stature should have counted towards Lawrie giving him extra kudos in the dressing room.

When Lawrie took over Saints we were comfortable in Division One, but we went down.

Today he would have lost his job.

It was good thing for Saints he did not because he achieved great things in his time with Saints and nobody can deny his success especially winning the FA Cup.

Later on with the Saints he managed many top international stars with great skill and motivation, but if he had his time over again I think he would have managed Terry differently.

Terry left under a cloud which was sad for such a loyal and accomplished player.
