MALAYAN veterans are saying they will wear their medal despite what the government says (Daily Echo, June 15).

I think you will find that the argument is not so much as to whether they can wear these medals rather that they should not wear them because they have already been awarded one for that service by the British Government.

A similar case was a man awared a gallantry medal by the French. He was not awarded one by the British, which would have taken precedent; therefore, he quite rightly, and proudly, wore the French decoration.

In the case being argued at present, people serving in Malaya were awarded the British CSM (or GSM) so the MoD, in its infinite wisdom, has decreed that as those who served in Malaysia already have an equivalent British medal the one being awarded by the government of Malay is a commemorative medal and if worn should be worn under the medals awarded by our Government.
