WITH great interest did I read your spread about St Bonifàce (Winnifred of Exeter).
What you didn’t mention, however, that he is still patron saint of Germany and the Netherlands.
It seems rather strange, an Englishman as patron saint of Germany and Holland, Saint George, supposedly a Turk of England and St Patrick, supposedly a Frenchman, of Ireland.
I knew that Winnifred was educated in a teaching monastery in Nursling. The monastery was later destroyed by the Danes.
People just don’t realise, how much history is on our doorstep.
