IN JANUARY 2008, when plans for the Westquay Three (Watermark) development were in their early stages, I wrote a letter to the Echo as follows: “The developer is proposing a small green area running alongside the old city walls near the Quays swimming pool.
“How about making a real feature of this and extending it right down to the waterfront so that it becomes a boulevard linking it with the sea, along the lines of the Spanish Ramblas in Barcelona?
“A footbridge could be constructed across Herbert Walker Avenue to an upgraded Mayflower Park.”
Now that the landscaped area next to the old city walls has finally been created, and following recent similar comments from both the editor of the Daily Echo, Ian Murray, and by Robin Shepherd of Barton Willmore, I feel the time has come to repeat my idea, with the hope that such a scheme might be seen as feasible by future developers of the area, and a highly desirable feature to appeal to both the residents of the city and visitors alike.
