I AM very surprised that no one has taken up Daily Echo editor Ian Murray's suggestion of an elected mayor for Southampton.

In the 1920s and 1930s we had people like Sidney Kimber who forced through the building of the Civic Centre and created the Sports Centre.

Where are the likes of him today?

We need a man with vision, truthfulness and honesty - hard to find in today's world.

We do not want an ex-party councillor or a former MP of any party, for they have had their chance and blown it.

Southampton needs to clear out and clean up its waterfront.

I would suggest moving Red Funnel to a new terminal in the old docks car park opposite Gods House, It would be great for them and a solution to the traffic problem.

Then open up the whole waterfront from Town Quay to 101 berth pulling down the Royal Pier.

All we need is a man with vision. How about a man like Ian Murray for mayor or someone like-minded? Who could that be? Any suggestions?

While I applaud the sentiment, I can confirm I have no ambition to become the first elected mayor of Southampton - Ian Murray.
