I fully support the topping-up of fluoride in Southampton's drinking water to a level of one part per million in order to improve dental health in all ages, and especially to combat the huge levels of tooth decay in young children.

Tooth decay is caused by sugary foods and drinks especially between meals. Personally and through my work as an oral health educator I know that making positive changes to eating and drinking habits is very difficult, even more so now with the increase in availability and advertising of sugary foods and drinks particularly for children.

Water fluoridation is the single most effective way of improving dental health because it does not depend on changes in behaviour.
