THE Liberal Democrats delivered their most recent ‘Focus’ newsletter to me the other day – it always raises a chuckle in my household.
Whatever the coalition Government does that involves spending money or is popular, they try to take credit for.
There’s never any mention or justification of the unpopular measures that our Government is being forced to take. “Nothing to do with us,” I hear them say.
Any positive action taken by Southampton’s Conservative administration is only done according to them because of the pressure that the Liberal Democrats have brought to bear.
Even though there are only three Lib Dem councillors out of 48 councillors on Southampton City Council, this pressure is so great that we have to concede to their wishes!
According to the Lib Dem newsletters, the Conservative administration’s plan to put limits on the number of Houses of Multiple Occupation has finally taken place after years of Liberal Democrat campaigning.
What they don’t tell you is that when they were running the council and could have done something to address the issue, they did absolutely nothing – except talk.
Petitions, talk, pressure, discussions, campaigns, polls, feedback, support, endless leaflets, concern.
But at the end of it all, no action.
MATTHEW CLAISSE, Conservative councillor for Portswood, Southampton.
