EARLIER this month Fawley oil refinery and the emergency services had a mock disaster scenario.

Now I would have thought that in real life if a disaster happened in Fawley then there would have been the use of the local services – fire, ambulance and the police.

That would have then been followed by a call to other, further-out services to send all available services from a wider area. Plus if those local services were being used to their fullest then there would have been a back-up service to cover those being used in Fawley.

I was on my way to Southampton when I saw all of the services in the mock scenario. They were all in a pretty line, blue lights flashing, doing about 40mph and all in formation, clean as a whistle. They had a police bike stopping all the traffic to allow the convoy to progress unhindered.

What world do these scenario consultants live in?

In real life that would not happen. There would be a staggered call-out, no convoy of pretty vehicles and no police escort. To me it was a disaster scenario in how to waste public money.
