IN THE letter from Councillor Jeremy Moulton (Letters, June 20), he states that he voted against the closure of the police stations.

I would like to ask Cllr Moulton at what meeting did he vote against the closure? Was this a Southampton City Council meeting? Was it at a Conservative Party meeting? Or was it in the Conservative Groups pre-meeting of the Police Authority?

If you actually check the minutes of the meeting of the Police Authority where this issue was discussed, you will find that there was a) no recorded vote, b) all members of the Police Authority voted for the closure of the stations. The minutes also state that Cllr Moulton left the meeting after this issue. That just shows his commitment to the Police Authority that he could not stay for the whole meeting.

How can Cllr Moulton say that he was very disappointed that Cllr Jacqui Rayment proposed and voted for the closure? Cllr Rayment, as the chairman of the authority, would have been acting on the advice of officers of the Police Authority. By saying this, is Cllr Moulton saying that when he has chaired a meeting he has never proposed something contrary to what he believes in?

All this is very rich when you consider that the Police Authority, of which Cllr Moulton is or was a member of, is made up of Conservative and Liberal Democrat members and Cllr Rayment was the ONLY Labour councillor sitting on it, and the Police Authority members have continuously voted for as the chair.

I would say to Cllr Moulton he is just as much to blame for the closure of Portswood and Shirley police stations in Southampton and the closure of any other police stations around the county. Cllr Moulton has never heard of collective responsibility.
