REFERENCES are frequently made to the fact that Southampton is known as the Gateway to the World but I recall very clearly a large sign opposite the entrance to the Royal Pier, and another at the top entrance of The Avenue, both stating “Southampton, Gateway to the Empire”.
This recollection is confirmed by a small booklet I possess, dated 1 January 1949, called “Notes for the guidance of police”, issued to me when I joined Southampton County Borough police in 1952.
The booklet commenced with a brief description of the borough, with its then area of 9,600 acres and population of 176,000, saying clearly it was “The Gateway to the Empire”. Obviously this description no longer applies, but for historical accuracy its former status should not be forgotten.
JIM BROWN, Southampton.
