LIKE many local cricket players and followers, I have been really disappointed that several months of dreadful weather has wrecked local cricket fixture lists.

But any of my personal doubts about the game’s sustainability disappeared when the Gosport Under 9s Cricket Tournament was held at Privett Park.

Seven teams from the area from Woolston to Hambledon enjoyed a series of matches in beautiful sunshine. Around the boundary picnics and barbecues made it a day out for all the family, with everyone enjoying this great outdoor national pastime.

Joy Godbold, chairman of the Gosport Cricket Club, should be congratulated on her hard work in organising this festival, which did so much to encourage these very keen young players.

For the record Locks Heath won the tournament and congratulations to them, but the winner was the game of cricket which needed a lift in what has been up till now a dismal season.

Well done to all the young cricketers involved. They not only all played so well but with true cricket spirit and provided such fine entertainment.
