I DIDN’T see the original article (Daily Echo, July 18) but would like to comment on Lyn Brayshaw’s letter (Daily Echo July 31).

There may be residential enclaves within a city where 20mph could be appropriate. However, today’s traffic levels dictate the speed of traffic in urban areas most of the time.

The 40mph limit in The Avenue was cited as inappropriate. In my experience it is difficult to reach that speed during the day when busy, which is most of the time, whereas when clear it is a perfectly reasonable speed.

What is most important with speed limits is that they should be appropriate and balanced. It is now being realised in most walks of life that more and more regulation does not solve the problem. Better education and creating a sense of responsibility in all things would produce a better outcome.

First you have to establish that there really is a problem.

Putting up more signs on pavements for blind people to negotiate is not the answer.
