JOHN Vetterlein is wrong to congratulate Southampton council over its alleged maintenance of the Old Cemetery (Letters, August 4).

The flora and fauna have only flourished because of many decades of neglect by successive councils.

My wife and I, both Sotonians for over 80 years, have family graves in the Old Cemetery, paid for at great expense by our grandparents to honour the memory of their loved ones.

Some years ago we were only able to locate the site of one grave through the expertise of the Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery.

It had vanished under the onslaught of ivy and vegetation and it took me many hours to hack away and uncover the memorial, restoring it to its former glory.

I have no knowledge of the consultation mentioned by Mr Vetterlein, nobody asked me.

The area is a cemetery first and foremost. If Mr Vetterlein likes flora and fauna so much, let him neglect his own garden and let nature take over!
