IT IS great that Bradley Wiggins should highlight the safety of cycling on our streets. He is right to say that things are improving as more people cycle and that “there’s got to be a bit of give and take” so we all get along better whether driving a car or riding a bike.
He has since tweeted: “I haven’t called for helmets to be made the law.” That is right too because the poor young man killed by the Olympic bus recently could not have survived being crushed, with or without a helmet.
Forcing people to wear helmets has proven to be the least effective way of improving safety.
Department for Transport researchers could not identify any measurable benefit of cycle helmets after reviewing all the evidence.
Happily cycling is far safer than most people think, very serious injuries are becoming rarer as more people take to riding a bike.
Reducing the danger relies on us all taking better care of each other on the roads.
