A SUDDEN attack by two loose greyhounds has left another dog in a serious condition after they "ripped her body to pieces”.

Ten-year-old Ellie the Yorkshire terrier was taking a stroll near Hazel Park, Totton, on Sunday evening.

She was going on a daily walk with Angela Harder, who has been walking Ellie for her elderly neighbour Jean Maulini during the lockdown.

The 63-year-old security officer said the two greyhounds ran over and started ripping Ellie’s skin with their teeth.

Angela, from Totton, said: “It was the first time in my life that I didn’t take my phone out as I didn’t have pockets.

“There was not a soul in the park and I thought to myself, if someone attacks me I can’t contact anyone.

“It was my last thought before I saw two greyhounds running really fast, without an owner, and as soon as they reached me, the first dog instantly started ripping Ellie's body to pieces.

“I picked her up and they both started trying to attack me, and were going for my throat. I thought they were going to kill me and Ellie.”

Ellie suffered several bites to her neck and body, leaving her with a large gash.

Angela said she then threw Ellie into Hazel Park play area to get her away from the dogs.

She started "screaming hysterically" for help when two men - one called John Schuttler - came to her aid.

While Angela managed to escape and get Ellie home to her owner, one of the men was attacked by the greyhounds.

Her owner Jean said: "Ellie is very lucky to be alive. We need these dogs caught and the owner punished.

"I'd like to thank Angela, John Schuttler and the other gentleman that was injured who no doubt saved Ellie's life putting their own at risk."

Ellie also suffered a damaged eye and has had stitches in her neck and side.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "We have received a report of two greyhounds loose in Hazel Park, Totton, which attacked two people just after 7.45pm on Sunday, May 10. Anyone with information can call 101, quoting 44200165617."
