THOUSANDS of hand-knitted poppies have been used to create a spectacular tribute to those killed in the two world wars and other conflicts.
Members of St Michael and All Angels Church in Lyndhurst decided to mark Remembrance Sunday by creating a Fall of Poppies for the Fallen - a 50ft triangular display that sweeps down from the bell tower.
Around 5,700 wool flowers fashioned by people from all over the world appear to cascade from an archway high above the churchyard.
The colourful tribute was attached to the Grade 1-listed building with the help of retained (part-time) firefighters based in the village.
People came up with the idea earlier this year amid continuing uncertainty over the coronavirus pandemic and what impact it would have on Remembrance Sunday commemorations.
Speaking in September the Priest in Charge, the Rev David Potterton, issued a rallying cry to parishioners.
Acknowledging that Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day would look "very different" this year he said: "We must remember the fallen, especially those from our own community.
"Whatever else happens there will be a memorial to those who gave their lives for our freedom.
"I'm told they (the poppies) are very easy to knit. As the evenings draw in make the most of the time and get knitting."
Many of those involved in the project used wool and knitting needles supplied by Emerald Crafts in the High Street.
A statement on the church's website says: "We are overjoyed to share with you the work of an entire community and beyond - our Fall of Poppies for the Fallen.
"Thank you so much to every single person who knitted one of the 5,500 donated poppies, helped us attach them and the Lyndhurst Fire Brigade for helping us to create the fall from the bell tower.
"We think it looks wonderful and really hope it helps you remember all those who laid down their lives for our country."
The "outstanding" display was praised by former New Forest resident Wendy Hobbs, who now lives in Shirley, Southampton.
She said: "I heard about the display thought I must go and see it.
"People from all around the world have donated the knitted or crocheted poppies. It must have taken hours to put it all together."
