A TEENAGE boy has been jailed for six years after launching a knife attack on his victim in a Southampton alleyway, a court heard.

Ingus Birulis was left with a collapsed lung, cracked rib and punctured liver following an incident that shocked city residents.

The 18-year-old was set upon in Monks Way by a 15-year-old, from Southampton, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Prosecuting, Kelly Brocklehurst told how the defendant, now 16, stabbed his victim five times as he ran towards the safety of his car.

He even stabbed him as he lay on the ground, the court heard.

The defendant then fled the area whilst Birulis banged on doors asking residents for help.

Mr Brocklehurst told how the attacker and his victim were known to each other with the older teenager driving the other around in his car.

However, an argument erupted between the two on October 11 of last year.

Following a trial at Southampton Crown Court in March, the teen was found not guilty of attempted murder but guilty of wounding with intent.

Mr Brocklehurst added that when police raided his home, they found guns, ammunition, and drugs.

A shorn off shotgun was found under the floorboards in his bedroom, as well as a bolt action rifle and a dismantled baton.

Officers also seized 27 grams of cannabis.

He pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited firearm, possessing a firearm without a certificate, possessing ammunition without a certificate and possessing a class B drug.

Defending, Jodie Mittell said the attack “has not had a long-term lasting impact on the victim and his life”.

She added that the boy has a learning disability and is “vulnerable to exploitation”.

But Brian Forster QC said it was “down to chance whether the victim died”.

He went on to say that though there was only one deep penetrating wound.

Addressing the boy, he said: “You were clearly someone who was able to fully go out and about. You come across as someone that can look after yourself. Someone who can be influenced by others.”

He sentenced him to a total of six years in youth detention.
