THE city of Winchester was entertained and educated through the incredible story of soldier transit camps on Morn Hill during the First World War.

Winchester Rotarian Ronni Davis wrote, produced and directed the play which told actual stories about the city's experience during the conflict and of the soldiers' lives who were billeted at the Morn Hill Camp.

There were more than one million soldiers who passed through Winchester between 1914-18.

The stories were brought to life in words and music in a dramatic way by an eclectic cast of actors and singers.

The history of the performance comes from a 100-year old promise made by the Mayor of Winchester in 1914 to erect a statue to honor the troops who passed through Winchester.

Now, 100 years on, the Rotary Club and the City of Winchester are honoring that promise, with all donation and ticket sales going to the placement of the statue, which will be carried out later in the year.

It will be a permanent memorial to those soldiers, many of whom never returned from Flanders Fields.
