The Lights
Fast becoming one of my favourite shows, Alan Menken’s memorable music and Glenn Slater’s clever lyrics provide numerous opportunities for the whole cast to strut their funky stuff.
Ambitious club singer Deloris Van Cartier (very convincing played by Becky Rungen) sees her controlling gangster boyfriend Curtis (Lee Farmer) commit murder and former schoolmate ‘Sweaty’ Eddie Souther (the assured Paul Marsh) arranges police protection in a convent.
Kizzy Romer-Lee was confident as Mother Superior, sceptical about her new arrival, but won-over by Deloris’ effect on the hitherto-tuneless choir. Of the supporting cast, Heidi Hodgekinson (as postulant Sister Mary Robert) provided, for me, the show’s vocal highlight with her solo The Life I Never Led.
Colin Gray made an impressive debut as Musical Director and the wonderful in-house designed and constructed set deserves a mention. A late-sounding doorbell prompted an unscripted comical moment in Director Claire Nias’s show that was thoroughly enjoyed by the packed audience.
