SHOPPERS in Winchester might have thought they’d entered a time warp as children from Chesil Theatre's youth group presented characters from the past on the streets of the city.
The youngsters, with their director Corinne James, have been discovering secrets of Chesil Street. This is part of a community arts project “We found it in Chesil” being created by French artist Laurence Rushby.
The characters included a station master at the former Winchester Chesil station, a Victorian thief who took the plate from St Peter’s Chesil church, and a baker from the City Mill. Queen Mary, known as Mary Tudor, was also an important personage having been given the Chesil Rectory by her father Henry VIII. This is now the oldest commercial building in Winchester.
With additional props and costumes, the children also interacted with people taking an evening stroll along The Weirs, inviting them to imagine themselves back in time.
