This was an enthusiastically received production owing much to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Malcolm Sircom originally updated the play prior to the Athens Olympics in 2004. Noel Thorpe-Tracey has now cleverly changed it to match the forthcoming 2012 London Olympics. The play used topical national and local references throughout, as well as using the original rhyming prose of Shakespeare.
The Chorus (Hannah Pasotti, Jaz Halstead, Becki Smith, Chloe Varndell, Nikki Smith) is used throughout to good effect. Oberon (Russell Haugh) and Puck (Sean Abbott) are convincing, though both could project their voices more. The four lovers (Joe Pickering, Steve Best, Sian Clarke, Vicky Giddings) run the gamut of emotions well. Bottom (John Dovey) steals the scene performing his play at the London mayor’s wedding. All the cast sang, with varying success, and the whole effect was enjoyable.
