IMAGINE your ultimate girls’ night in.

Glued to your favourite film, the dancing, whopping, cheering and singing along to the antics of Johnny and Baby gets louder as more Sauvignon Blanc disappears.

Then transport it to the theatre, multiply it and you have Dirty Dancing on stage.

Last night’s packed audience, to a woman and a few men (including Saints legends Matt Le Tissier and Francis Benali) were clearly fans of the ‘’80s classic movie. Some were worked up into such a frenzy that by the time Johnny burst back on to the scene to proclaim that infamous line “Nobody puts Baby in the corner” they were practically hysterical.

In this superb new version of the musical, a vast improvement on the London production, Eleanor Bergstein, also the author of the film, retells the love story that unfolds one summer at Kellerman’s.

Teenage do-gooder Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman learns lessons in love, life and dance while falling for the charms of Johnny Castle, the misunderstood older rogue who is employed as the resort’s resident dancer.

Paul-Michael Jones and Emily Holt sizzle in the lead roles, with great chemistry and utterly perfect attention to detail with every look and every dance step.

They are backed by an incredible orchestra and ensemble, most notably leggy Charlotte Gooch who impresses as Penny.

Back projection and a revolving stage are used to brilliant effect, cleverly recreating the log and water scenes. In fact, with the exception of one added campfire scene, barely a word deviates from that much-loved script from the big screen.

I’m a huge fan of the film and I loved the show so much I’m going again tomorrow. Whether I’ll be able to resist yet another return before the month remains to be seen.
