THIS play is adapted from an award-winning book written for older children.

It follows the gripping story of JJ (Matilda Murphy), a girl who is tried for the murder of her childhood friend Michelle (Jess Finlay).

We meet her aged 17, released from juvenile detention and with a new identity.

She is making a life for herself but both the press and her irresponsible mother (Chloe Black) are determined to find her.

Murphy is a compelling story-teller treading the line between an ordinary 17-year-old and a young woman grappling with a terrible action, provoked by a set of uncompromising circumstances.

Supported by stylistic projection, a simple set and clear sound, the story meanders back and forth in time and between snapshots of the story to the internal dilemmas of JJ.

It has the potential to be confusing, but the strong cast ensure the story flows and the disarray remains confined to JJ’s musings.

The contrasting characters provide the backdrop to the disquieting and unsentimental storyline.

An impressive and thought-provoking production.
