Nell Gwynn, the play is a bawdy romp with feminist overtones and Nell Gwynn (Kerry Butcher) is the tart with a heart, whose wit and guile win over the King. Butcher dazzled as the feisty slattern, delighting the audience with her first-rate acting and clear diction. Hats off also, to the other leading lady, Wayne Ings as Kynaston whose diva tantrums and sweeping exits were gleefully anticipated. Understandably the King (Leighton Fort) is charmed by her vitality, and this results in a touching liaison, that is both believable and charming. There are many excellent performances and some smaller parts, such as Nancy (Helen Dunn) and Ma (Christine English) are grown by the actor’s finesse. Supported by music, set, costumes and lighting, this historical retelling (with liberties) strikes a balance, with lightness and humour, but also the depth of the characters and relationships. One to see!
